Rector's Letter

A word from William...

On 10th October as part of the national architects ‘open house’, a opportunity for free access to buildings that are not normally open to the public on Saturdays, the church was open and also as part of a new Iwalk of Tallaght. The local Iwalk is an initiative by South Dublin County Council allowing you to download onto your Ipod a walking tour of Tallaght.

On the same day the Indian congregation who use our Church on Saturdays were filming a programme to be broadcast on Christmas Day on Indian TV. They asked me to record a Christmas message.

On the 11th October Martin O’Connor came to talk to us at our 11am service on the work of the Bishop’s Appeal. Bishops' Appeal does not engage directly in development work itself, but channels funds through development agencies and partner churches who are already in place in areas of need.

Bishops' Appeal contributes to relief of suffering in time of emergencies whether natural or man-made. However, their main concern is to support ongoing development in the fields of sustainable agriculture, health, including HIV/AIDS, and education in many parts of the world. They aim to enable people to have more control over their own lives and futures so that they are less dependent on others than they are today.

On October 16th we were delighted to welcome Rev Adrienne Galligan, Rector of Crumlin and Chaplelizod, who preached at our Friday evening Harvest service. Thank you to the ladies who so beautifully decorated the Church for Harvest and to those who provided the Harvest supper.

On the following Sunday the 18th we had our Girl’s Brigade Enrolment Service and Children’s Harvest. I would like to thank the GB captain Carol Fox and her group of leader for all the hard work they do with the girls and also for providing the refreshments after the service.

We are looking forward to our annual Christmas Sing Along on Friday 4th December which although a fundraiser also proves to be a good parish social evening. Come along and get into the festive spirit!

Operation Christmas Child

The local distributors of Operation Christmas Child are looking for volunteers to check the boxes. If you would like to help, they are meeting in the Old Glen Abbey building (opposite Jacob’s factory) in the week following the return deadline from 10am – 2pm and from 6.30pm – 9.30pm Ph. 087 622 2184

Bowling Club

The AGM of the Indoor Bowling Association took place on 22nd. Sept. in our parish hall. The Association President Billy Gould handed over the chain of office to the newly elected president Trevor Peare. We wish Trevor a successful year as president.

The club has completed team selections for all competitions, and all dates have now been arranged for League Matches. We wish all teams the best of luck in their forthcoming matches, and hope all players enjoy the seasons bowling. Our first match is set for Tuesday 3rd. November against Harold’s Cross Club.

Boys' Brigade

Our enrolment service will take place on Sunday November 1st, when we look forward to meeting the members of the Christian Motorbike Club who will visit and speak to us at the service. We look forward to a full attendance at this service when all officers and members will be enrolled for the coming year. We are very lucky to have a team of dedicated leaders in the company and we hope they will be well supported by parents and friends at the service.

Founders Day service in St. Anne’s Church was well attended. It was, as usual a lovely service and we were very fortunate to have a mild afternoon for the march past. One of our junior boys, Senan Barrett read at the service, and though the reading was long he did an excellent job. Well done Senan.

We are very grateful to Senans' Dad, Anthony Barrett, who is working with the boys in Bible Class. Anthony joined us as a new leader this year and is working with junior section and company section.

School News

Thank goodness we have managed to keep the “Swine Flu” at bay. The new sanitizers which we installed during the summer are obviously helping. The children are particularly vigilant in their use.

The various field-trips which we went on during September went very well.

Ms. Caroline Rountree has taken over the Green Schools project while Mrs. Edel Beckett is on Maternity Leave. A new committee has been formed and has met for the first time this year already.

1st and 2nd class with Caroline went to Knocksink Woods on Friday 9th October.

Ms. Annette Boles is doing Early Irish Settlements at the moment and she took her 3rd and 4th class to the National Heritage Centre in Ferrycarrig, Co. Wexford on Friday 9th October. It’s a long trip but well worth it.

Ms. Mary Conroy, our National Educational Psychological Service (NEPS) psychologist will be working with us on Thursday 15th October on the Continuum Support to Staff Workshop.

The children in Junior and Senior Infants with their teacher Ms. Linda Morrow and Special Needs Assistant (SNA), Ms. Geraldine Healy are going to Tallaght Adventure Centre on Friday 16th October.

5th and 6th class will be going to Armagh Planetarium on Friday 13th November in conjunction with their project on Astronomy.

We have a little surprise organised for the children on Thursday 22nd so obviously we can’t let “the cat out of the bag” at this stage. Watch this space!

The children are involved in both, the MS ReadaThon and the Samaritan’s Purse, Operation Christmas Child, again this year.

A big thank you to Ms. Miriam Gibney who put the school forward for an Impact Award from GlaxoSmithKline, Miriam came to the school on Monday 12th October and presented us with a cheque for €300.00.

School will close for the mid-term break on Friday 23rd October at 12.00pm, re-opening on Monday 2nd November.

St Maelruain's Mothers' Union

On Saturday 17th October, twelve of us travelled to Russborough House. We enjoyed a tour, walk in the grounds in glorious sunshine and lunch in the restaurant.

Our next meeting will be on Monday 9th November when Martha Waller will give a talk on prison chaplaincy.

SAOIRSE would like toothpaste as our November donation.

Bible Quiz

Anne O’Halloran has put together a November Bible Quiz in aid of Parish Funds. It is available from Anne after Church on Sundays. The cost of the quiz is €3.

We held our October Drive on Monday 19th with a good crowd in attendance.

Thanks to all who donated raffle prizes, they are much appreciated each month. Also a special thanks to Boswell Huxley who is back helping us again.

Funeral

On October 27th the funeral of Sarah Gallagher took place here in St. Maelruain’s. Sarah died in the Orwell Nursing Home but had come to live here in the parish with her daughter Jean Poole (who had passed away last February) and with Jean’s daughter Lesley. We extend our deepest condolences to Sarah’s family and friends.

Baptism

On Sunday 11th October Eoghan Beckett was baptised. Eoghan is the baby son of Edel (nee McGlynn), one of our parish school’s teachers and David, who is a primary school teacher in Clondalkin parish school. We pray for Eoghan and his family as he begins his Christian life.

Wedding

On 23rd October Ruth Lillie who had lived in the parish in recent years married Cormac O’Connell in her home parish of Boyle. We wish Ruth and Cormac well in their new home in Limerick, where Cormac is from.

Music Group

The music group is looking for new members, they sing once a month at the family service and usually practice twice a month on Tuesdays at 7.45pm. Please contact Valerie on 462 1044 for more information.

Rector's Letter June 2009

A Word from William...

On Sunday the 10th May, during Christian Aid Week, we were delighted to welcome Tendai Mondondo as the speaker on behalf of Christian Aid. She spoke of her experiences working in various locations around the world particularly on gender- based violence and how important the work of Christian Aid is as it improves the quality of life for so many.

In the following week the Refugee Drop in Centre who use our Small Hall on a weekly basis held a coffee morning in aid of Christian Aid Week. The women of the centre provided the refreshments which was more of a feast that a coffee morning! Tendai also came to speak to those attending reiterating the subject matter of her Sunday morning visit.

On the Sunday 24th May we were visited by some of the crew members of the Logos Ship. The ship is a converted car ferry and it now functions as a floating bargain book - fare with a crew of 400 self supporting volunteer crew members from 45 different nations. They sell all sorts of books from general - interest, reference, careers, family life to bibles and Christian books. Perhaps the next time the ship is moored in Dublin you might consider visiting.

At this time of year when all the parish organisations are winding down for the year I have been attending the various AGM’s. I enjoyed both the Boy’s Brigade and Girl’s Brigade displays, it was great to see the culmination of the children’s hard work throughout the year. Congratulations to the leaders on all that they do for the children. I also attended the table tennis dinner in Joel’s and I am looking forward to the bowls bar- b –que in a few weeks time.

I hope that all the readers of the Losset have a lovely summer while remembering those doing exams and that this glorious weather continues.

Girls' Brigade

We are at the end of another year and after a wonderful Display we break for the summer months.

I have special ‘Thank Yous’ to say at this time to all my Leaders and helpers who give so willingly their time and talent to work with all the girls in so many ways.

We had a very successful year with the Junior / Senior team winning silver medals at the District club camp and the Explorers winning gold medals in the hoop competitions and silver medals in the modern dance competition.

At the National Modern Dance competition the Brigaders were recalled with three other teams for 4th place, they performed brilliantly and came out winners, we were all over the moon.

During the year the Junior and Seniors did a personal hygiene course which is a great training at their age 9 – 12 years and they all enjoyed, learned a lot and thank Sharon. They also had great fun decorating tee-shirts with re-cycled goods.

The explorers recycled materials to make models of company members and they looked fantastic.

We had a non uniform day when all the girls wear their own gear and Sharon, Nicola and Dara painted the Explorers nails beautifully with little flowers, stars and patterns. We did this because they wouldn’t normally be allowed nail-varnish in their uniform. We were delighted to contribute €262.00 to the District who presented a cheque for €2000 to The Sunshine Children’s Hospice.

We also had a very productive time knitting baby hats. We have over 300 hats to give to Temple Street Children’s Hospital and The Coombe Hospital for their premature baby units.

Mothers' Union

Visit to Armagh Cathedral & St Patricks Trian Visitor - Centre 16th May 2009.

We had a very enjoyable day despite the weather! Thirty Seven of us, including friends and Clondalkin Mothers Union Members ventured forth at 9am on Saturday morning 16th May.

Our first stop was at the Carrickdale Hotel, for tea, coffee and scones. When we reached Armagh the sun had broken through. We had a guided tour of St Patrick’s Cathedral, followed by a visit to the Trian Visitor Centre and some of us also had some retail therapy!

On the way home we stopped in Ardee at Hunters Hotel for a four course meal.

St Maelruain’s Mothers Union Project: SAOIRSE.

It was unanimously agreed to continue donating until June and commence again in September. I have delivered the paper towels and for June they would like strong plastic sacks which you can bring along to the Summer Sale OR leave in the Church Porch for collection by me.

School News

These notes were received in time for the Church Review Magazine deadline on 15th May. Hopefully the principal will give us an update in September.

The summer term is always a busy one and this year is no exception. Our Whole School Evaluation (WSE) report will be posted on the web eventually, with the holidays coming up it’s difficult to know whether it will be before or after the summer. The Board of Management (BOM) and staff were presented with a draft version orally on 31st March. We were quite happy with it.

We had a Special Needs Assistants review on Tuesday 5th May. A decision on our allocation of resources will be given shortly.

As usual we are involved in the National Spring Clean, unfortunately on the day we planned was so wet that we had to postpone it for a week. Thank you to those parents who helped.

The Department of Education and Science has called all Principals and members of the Special Education Teams to a seminar on, “Meeting the Needs of Students with Special Educational Needs through Individualised Planning.” This was on 7th May.

A very exciting concept called “Marine Dimensions” is coming to our school on Tuesday 12th May to show slides of marine life to the children in Junior Infants to 4th class. They will have a Touch-Pool with them, the children will get to handle some of the creatures. On Thursday 14th they will present the same show for the children in 5th and 6th class who will then go on “Safari” to Sandycove!

3rd and 4th class with Ms. Annette Boles are going to the Ark on Friday 15th to do a Dance and Percussion workshop.

On Tuesday 26th May, Ms. Caroline Rountree is taking 1st and 2nd class, with Ms. Bernie Dixon (SNA) to the Ark for a Fossil Art workshop.

Induction Day for the new children and their Parents who are coming to our school in September will take place on Wed 27th May.

Edel will be going on Maternity Leave on Thursday 28th May. We wish her every luck and we’re eagerly waiting to hear the good news in June! Edel’s replacement will be Ms. Karen Hendy.

The children in 5th & 6th class will be going on their school tour to Dalkey Quarry and Killiney Hill, they will be abseiling and orienteering! The rest of the school are all going to the Little Gym in Liffey Valley on 16th June.

There will be a School Development Planning day on Tuesday 9th June, the children will have the day off.

Thanks to the School Completion Programme the whole school will be going to the Civic Theatre for a production of Peter Pan on the 12th June. We will look forward to the treat!

The children in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class will be going to a Sports Day, organised by Citywise, on Thursday 11th June. Our School Sports Day will be on Friday 19th June, starting at 10.00am. There will be a football match between our school and St. John’s National School, Clondalkin on Thursday 24th June. Up St. Maelruain’s!

The Art Exhibition will take place on Thursday 25th June and the 6th Class Graduation will be on Friday 26th June. School will close for the summer vacation on Tuesday 30th June re-opening for the new school year on Monday 31st August.

Table Tennis Club

The Thursday night Table Tennis Club has closed up for the summer following the AGM on Thur 14th May.

Towards the end of the season the club was going through a very strong patch with numbers attending up considerably. In fact there have been up to 18 players in the club towards the end of the season which created a great buzz in the hall. All standards are catered for and new members will be welcome to join come the new season in September 2009.

In 2008/2009 season St Maelruain’s had two teams in the UCTTL, one played Div. 1 and the second team played Div 2. Congratulation to the first team (Anthony Iyere, David Gibbons and Sharon Gibbons) on finishing 2nd in Div. 1 and runners up to York Road. Both teams got to the finals of their respective Cup competitions and our first team won the Cup in Div. 1.

Unfortunately our second team (Bobby Wilson, Claire Burke and David Gould) could not all attend on the finals due to other commitments (Australia in the case of a Gould!) so they had to withdraw from the competition.

Before the club closed for the summer, we ran off the club tournaments forthe Ernie May Trophy and for the Shield. Winners were David Gibbons (who beat Sharon Gibbons in the final) & Brian Gibney who beat Tommy Dunne for the Shield. Well done to both David &Brian. Andrew Seymour – Hon. Sec.

Discovery 5th Anniversary

Discovery 5th Anniversary service of ‘Discovery Ministry’ takes place on Sunday 5th July in Christchurch Cathedral at 3.00pm. The preacher will be The Very Revd. Patrick Towers. There will be light refreshments served in the Crypt after the service.

Condolences

Our deepest sympathy to Alan Singleton and the rest of the Singleton family on the death of Alan’s Mother, Olive. The funeral took place on Friday 29th May in St. Mary’s, Crumlin.

Rector's Letter May 2009

A Word from William

We continued with our Lenten services using the Church’s Ministry of Healing Lenten course ‘Soul Spark’and began Holy Week on Palm Sunday with pampas grass at the end of each pew, instead of palm leaves, to remind us that Jesus was a King with the people for little more that a day. A service followed each night of Holy Week concluding with Easter Sunday.

Thank you to the ladies who so beautifully decorated the church for Easter.

On the evening of Easter Sunday there was a Concert in the Church featuring young traditional Swedish musicians ‘FIKA’ along with ‘LONNRA’ who are young traditional Irish musicians. It was a very enjoyable evening.

The Boy’s Brigade Display took place on 25th April, which was very enjoyable. I am very grateful to the three Dads who have volunteered to come on board as leaders.

Following Lent and Easter I was delighted to be able to continue with our joint Alpha course, which at this time is being run in St. Dominic’s. This is my third time to take part in an Alpha course and I am enjoying the experience.

At this time of year second level students are preparing for state exams and third level are in the midst of exams. May I take this opportunity to wish all those parishioners who are sitting exams the very best with their studies and hope that they are not too stressed or overwhelmed by the work involved.

Whist Drive

We held our April Drive on Monday 20th with a reasonable attendance.

Our thanks to Sylvia Moody’s sister Olive who was home on holidays and helped out on the night.

Donations for our raffle are much appreciated each month. The next drive will take place on 18th May in the Small Hall at 8.00pm. George Furney – Hon. Secretary.

Boys' Brigade

The display took place on Saturday April 25th. Our inspecting officer was Douglas Bailey, former Captain of the company. We were delighted to welcome Douglas back along with Muriel for the evening . There was a good turnout of family and friends to see the hard work the boys have been doing over the last year. We were very pleased also to see some parishioners at the display and their help at the end of the night was greatly appreciated. Thank you to all of you for your help with the clearing of the hall and in the kitchen.

All sections entertained us very well throughout the evening. The Anchors and Junior section boys singing was very enjoyable and of course the Anchor boys always provide plenty of entertainment with their skipping and tumbling activities.

Company section along with juniors gave an excellent display on the vaulting horse with some fun vaulting thrown in. To finish up the evening, Junior section performed the drama that won them the Battalion drama competition recently. The boys hope to perform this moving drama at the family service at some stage in the future.

The display would not be the same if we didn’t have Peter O’Callaghan and the 1st Dublin Co. band to play for us. They are a huge help to us during the whole year. Many thanks lads!

This year we were very pleased to have two winners of the Presidents Badge in Company Section, Robert Styles and Alex Graham. This award is the second highest in Boy’s Brigade and is only awarded when all badges have been achieved and certain targets met and leadership is shown as laid out in the programme for the award. The award is well deserved by Robert and Alex who have many years of service in the company and have displayed their exceptional willingness to take part in all activities of Boy’s Brigade. Well done to you both.

At the end of the evening, the officers presented Douglas Bailey with a gift to thank him for his many years of loyal service to the company.

Junior section boys are off to Kilkenny for their week end away in May, while Anchor boys are off to Fort Lucan shortly.

As we close for another session, we would like to thank the leaders, John Donoghue, Terry Barrett, Linda McGlynn, Susan Carroll, Rachel Mc Coy and Evan Mc Auley for their commitment and for all the hard work throughout the year.

This year also we were lucky to have Amy Deverell and Emma O’Rourke assist with Anchors and Juniors as part of their work towards their Presidents Award. The girls were of great assistance and it is hoped they might consider returning in September to continue working with the boys.

We plan to re open on 25th September.

Mothers' Union

Our AGM was held following Holy Week Service on Monday 6th April 2009. Valerie thanked Pam Stroughair – Treasurer, Tea Ladies Carol Laughlin , Regina Donoghue and the secretary for their work throughout the year. A lively discussion then took place on suggestions for the coming year followed by a Bring & Buy and supper.

Our outing is planned for Saturday 16th May to Armagh Cathedral and we will be joined by
members of our neighbouring parish Clondalkin. We still have some seats available should any other parishioner wish to join us. Full details of the day available from Valerie or Miriam.............

St Maelruain’s Mothers Union Project: SAOIRSE.
Thank you to all for your hand and tea towels for our April contribution. For May they have asked for kitchen rolls…please bring them along on 16th May…. It was unanimously agreed to continue contributing monthly to June 09, recommencing in September 09.

Bowling Club

The Club held its AGM on Tues. 28th April last. Jim Bird was elected our new Captain. Our annual Barbeque is planned for Sat. 20th. June, weather permitting, at the home of our ex-captain Bill Gould.

Our Club reopens again on 22nd. September next. Wishing all our members a sunny summer.

On Sat 25th April Heather Katya Krebs, daughter of Simon and Marsha was baptised. We pray for Heather and her family as she begins her Christian life.

Summer Sale 6th June

Yes, it’s that time of year again ! The Summer Sale is the parish’s main fundraiser of the year. As we face these recessional times please do what you can to make this year’s sale a big success! You are being given plenty of time to clear out those cupboards and give your unwanted treasure to the parish sale! Make a donation to the gift stall – book stall – toy stall - plant stall - bric-a-brac, funiture or groceries. The raffle is the biggest earner at the sale so please make an effort to sell tickets to your family and friends. Contact Ronnie Scott for tickets at 086 804 5090.

Help is always needed on the day if you would like to give a hand on the stalls or any other way contact. Ronnie Scott or the parish office 462 6006

Following the raffle the biggest money maker at the sale is the bottle stall, Ronnie Scott makes a huge effort every year seeking donations of ‘bottles’ if you would like to give to the bottle stall, there will be a basket in the church porch for donations of bottles (and groceries for the cake and groceries stalls) or contact the parish office.

Please Bake a cake for the cake stall, come on the day and have tea / coffee and bring your family and friends!

If everybody in the parish made a small effort we will ensure the success of this our main fundraising event of the year.

Easter Vestry

We held our Easter Vestry on Sunday 19th April in the Church following a shortened Morning Prayer service, which proved very successful. There were fifteen people standing for election. We had as least twice the number of people attending than in previous years when the Easter Vestry was held mid week in the Small Hall. Local Elections

We have two parishioners who are running for election in the up coming local elections. David Hutchinson Edgar is running as an Independent and Tendai Madondo is running for the Green Party. We wish them both well and congratulate them on their civic responsibility.

Logos

The Logos Hope ship will be berthed from Friday 15th May to Monday 1st June on Sir John Rogerson’s Quay. This ship is a floating Christian book shop as well as having the capacity to hold up to 1,000 visitors at a time with facilities for catering, health services and schooling. Country Air Association

The association was originally formed in the late nineteenth Century to enable needy parents, children and the unemployed to have a holiday in Ireland or perhaps a fare to England. In these days of financial uncertainty there may be people in the parish who previously had no need, who could now avail of some assistance in planning a break.

A word from William……

Ash Wednesday was the beginning of our Lenten Services. We have been using the Churches Ministry of Healing’s “Soul Spark’s” course whose aim is to aid the development of one’s own spirituality and prayer life.

The Tallaght Women’s World Day of Prayer service took place in St. Mark’s, Springfield. It was an enjoyable service and evening.

Mark Patton, a young parishioner who had only been married in St. Maelruain's a couple of years ago sadly died on St. Patrick’s night last year. It was lovely to see all his family at our St. Patrick’s day service and hope that it was some comfort to them.

On the afternoon of St. Patrick’s day I attended the “naming ceremony’”(an African tradition) of James and Precious Osingua’s baby daughter, Anna. You may recall that James was Church Warden a few years ago.

At 8pm that evening there was an enjoyable concert in the Church featuring the Irish Variety Ensemble, a brass and reed musical evening in aid of the Church roof. The concert was followed by refreshments in the small hall.

On 20th March there was a lunch in the Davenport Hotel for Nicky Gumble, co-author of the Alpha Course. He reported how attendance at his own course was up by 30% reflecting peoples changing attitudes in the current financial crisis. He said to was not a time for the church to withdraw but a time for the church to step up.

On Sunday 22nd our Good News Club hosted the tea and coffee after Church in aid of the Sunday School Societies 200th Anniversary Project “Sightsavers” and €400 was raised. Thank you to all who donated.

DG Camps

D&G Camps (Dublin and Glendalough Camps)

What?
D & G camps (formerly Youth Alive camps) are the Church of Ireland Youth camps & are run by 3Rock Youth. The aims of the camps are community, fun & general craziness in an environment where youth will be comfortable learning about God & their faith

Where?
D & G camps are run in Gurteen, an Agriculture College in Tipperary. Campus facilities include a heated swimming pool, tennis and basketball courts, sports centre, indoor and outdoor horse arenas and a floodlit pitch.

What goes on ?
Madness! From messy games to swimming galas, “Dangerous Olympics” to the fittest man and women and we will be also be looking forward to seeing the come back of our many stars from last year and some new ones too!

At our meeting on 9th March we welcomed Claire Missen, Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy who spoke to us on “Relationship Matters.”

The Mother’s Union Variety Show in the National Concert Hall on 24th March was greatly enjoyed by those of us who went along and of course we had the privilege of seeing our very own “Rectory Cat” on stage!

Our A.G.M. will be on Monday 6th April, following service for Holy Week at 8pm. As we are having a Bring & Buy Sale please bring along some items for sale.

Boys' Brigade

Our annual display will take place on Sat. 25th April in the parish centre. We are delighted that Mr Douglas Bailey, our former Captain, has agreed to be our Inspecting Officer at our display this year and we all look forward to seeing him again. All members are being graded for awards at the moment.

Dublin Fire Brigade visited us recently and brought along one of their fire engines to show us all it’s functions and tell us all about their work. Everybody had a chance to use the powerful hose and some had the chance to dress up in the firemen’s uniforms.......a little too large for all, but very entertaining! Many thanks to the fire crew from Belgard Fire Station and to John Donoghue for arranging the visit through Dublin Fire Brigade Headquarters.

Many thanks also to John who was granted a donation for his work with the Company on behalf of AIB Better Ireland Awards. This donation has been passed to the treasurer for use within the company and no doubt is a welcome addition to funds. Our thanks to AIB Better Ireland Fund for this generous donation.

Junior section went for a hike around Howth Head recently with other BB members from the Dublin battalion. The boys were lucky to come across a practise rescue on the head and had one of the participants explain the exercise to them. This was an added bonus to the hike, which is always a most enjoyable outing, even if all are exhausted and a little foot sore after!!!

Congratulations to Junior Section boys who won the Battalion Drama Shield in March. Their drama ‘Everybody Hurts’ was very moving and the judge was most complimentary in her remarks. The drama required accurate timing and expression and the boys had practised hard in previous weeks to perfect it. It is hoped that they will perform the drama at the morning service soon. Well done to Enoch, Lionel, Anthony, Senan, Jordan, Denzel and Adam who performed on the night and did the company and St. Maelruain's proud. We rounded off the night with a trip to McDonalds for boys and parents who came along to support.

School News

Well the big news of the month was definitely our Whole School Evaluation (WSE)! Ms. Eileen O’Sullivan spent the week of 23rd February with us. We await the report at this stage and hope that our school receives a positive and encouraging evaluation.

Our school uniform was introduced in September 1996. We have decided that it needs to be brought in to the 21st century and we are changing the colour of the polo-shirt to a rather fetching yellow. It looks lovely and the majority of the school community are happy with it. We are also using a new supplier and the parents will be able to buy the uniform directly from the shop rather than the school having to order for them. This will be a great help to our wonderful secretary, Ms. Karen Mooney. Karen is normally tripping over uniforms for June and September!

The children in Junior and Senior Infants with Mrs. Edel Beckett and Ms. Geraldine Healy, Special Needs Assistant (SNA) and Edel’s Mum, Mrs. Yvonne McGlynn went to the Tallaght Library on Monday 9th March for a bi-lingual Drama of “The Three Little Pigs,” it was enjoyed by all.

5th and 6th class are going to the Zoo on Friday 20th March. They are doing a project on Nature/Wildlife.

The Basketball Tournament organised by Tallaght Community Gardaí will take place on Tuesday 31st March in the National Basketball

The children in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class have been busy planting the various fruit and vegetables that were sent to all the schools this year from Agri Aware. It’s a really good project and the children love watching everything growing and of course finally eating them!

Once again we will be involved in the Skipathon this year. The money raised is for the Irish Heart Foundation.

School will close for the Easter Vacation on Friday 3rd April, re-opening for the summer term on Monday 20th April.

Bowling Club

The Finals matches of both the Miller & Hope competitions were held in our hall on Sat. 21st. March last. Congratulations to Finglas and to St. Matthias, Ballybrack who were the winners of the Cups respectively.

Our Rohu team had a successful season and again reached the final match which was held in Kill o’the Grange on Thurs. 26th. March against Whitechurch. Unfortunately we lost out for the second year running in winning the Rohu Cup, but congratulations goes to Whitechurch who were the better team on the night.

The Bowling season ends with the Bowling Association annual dinner and presenting of the cups to the winning teams, to be held in the Stillorgan Park Hotel on 3rd. April 2009. Our club competitions will continue for a few weeks more, ending with our AGM, the date yet to be decided.

Rector's Letter

A Word from William...

On the afternoon of 25th January the local Christian Unity Week service took place in St. Dominic’s, Old Bawn. It was a lovely service and it was followed by leisurely fellowship at the tea / coffee afterwards.

In February we said a sad farewell to our longstanding parishioners Stuart and Eileen Whitten. They have sold their home in Templeogue and have moved to Nenagh, Co Tipperary to be closer to their daughter Lynn and family. Stuart and Eileen were faithful worshipers here in St. Maelruain's all their married lives and founded the parish Bowling Club. Eileen organised the Flower Guild until just a few years ago as well as always being gladly on hand for any parish event. Stuart and Eileen were always very supportive to the Boy’s Brigade, Stuart being a former Captain. I will miss them and wish them every future happiness in their new home.

We welcomed back to the parish Lettie Morrow in February. She is now resident in Kiltipper Woods nursing home. We hope that she will be happy there and trust that parishioners will visit her.

At the beginning of February, Valerie and myself were invited to the Tallaght District Credit Union’s 40th annual dinner in the Maldron Hotel.

Our joint Alpha course started in the contact centre in St. Dominic’s on Wednesday 11th February with a meal.

Sunday 22nd was family service and was followed as usual by refreshments in the main hall which were hosted by John and Annama Samuel to celebrate their 16th wedding anniversary and to give thanks for John’s recovery from his illness. Thanks to John and Annama for the lovely spread and to the other Indian Parishioners who helped them.

In the Archbishop’s Letter published in the March Church Review magazine he quoted the following prayers that may help people through the difficult times that we face ahead. He found the prayers on the Church of England web site www.cofe.anglican.org

Lord God, we live in disturbing days: across the world, prices rise, debts increase, banks collapse, jobs are taken away, and fragile security is under threat. Funeral

The funeral of Jean Poole took place here in St. Maelruain's on February 5th . We extend our condolences to her children Johnathan, Jenny and Lesley and to the rest of her family and friends.

Baptism

The baptism of Johanna Jantja Eve took place on the afternoon of 1st March. We welcome Johanna, baby daughter of Jack and Natasha (nee Hutchinson) Poppema.

Parish Dance

Unfortunately due to rising costs, lack of interest and the present uncertain times it has been decided to cancel the parish dance that had been planned for Saturday 28th March.

St. Patrick's Evening Concert

The Irish Variety Ensemble are having a Brass and Reed concert in the Church at 8.00pm on St. Patrick’s evening in aid of the Church Roof Fund. The concert will be followed by refreshments in the small hall.

Easter Sunday Concert

12th April, Easter Sunday at 8.00pm there will be a Concert in the Church featuring the Swedish young musicians, FIKA along with LONNRA who are a group of Irish musicians.

There is a farewell evensong planned for the Archdeacon of Glendalough Edgar Swann on Sunday 8th March at 3.30pm in Christchurch Cathedral followed by refreshments and presentation in the Crypt.

Boys' Brigade

Preparations are continuing for our display, on April 25th, while junior section are working on an item for the drama competition. We are looking forward to a visit from Dublin Fire Brigade in early March. They will bring a fire engine along and show and explain all the equipment and it’s uses.

With the weather warming up and the evenings getting longer, we will be heading out into the hills for a hike or two.

Once again, we are appealing for new leaders for the year beginning in September next, to replace leaders stepping down. We have a serious shortage of leaders in the company and without the required number to comply with regulations, the company may have difficulty remaining open. We need committed people for Friday nights. Good leadership skills are essential and B.B experience would be helpful, though training courses are held on a regular basis. Please consider offering help. For further information, please contact John at 4522930 after 6pm.

On Monday 9th February we had our very own Ronnie Wallace speak to us on Turkey. Ronnie showed us an excellent presentation he prepared and spoke of the cultural history of ancient Turkey. Many thanks Ronnie from all of us

Sunday School

The previously postponed ‘BRAINARAMA’ will now take place on Sunday 29th March in Castleknock Parish Centre from 3.00pm – 5.00pm.

School News

We were notified just before we broke for the Christmas Vacation that we are to have a Whole School Evaluation (WSE) before the end of the academic year. Now we have been informed that it fact it will take place the week starting the 23rd February. This is immediately after the mid-term break.

Ms. Erica Mulholland, our DEIS (Developing Equality of Opportunity in Schools) facilitator came in to the classrooms on Tuesday 20th January doing some Maths for Fun. The children loved it! Erica will be returning on three consecutive Thursday to do Writing Recovery Training with the individual members of staff.

The children in 5th and 6th class participated in the West Tallaght Credit Union Table Quiz on Friday 30th January. One of our teams came in 4th place. Well done!

Four children from 5th and 6th class went to a discussion forum on Wednesday 4th February, Callum Street, Anastasia Kychygina, Sarah McAllister and Seán Berry Cronin. This is organised by South Dublin County Council, Comhairle na nÓg and is a wonderful opportunity for children to have their voices heard.

The 5th and 6th class visit to Croke Park was a great success on Thursday 5th February, the workshop was on Setanta and it was great fun. The Irish rugby team had a training session but we weren’t allowed to watch!

Bowling Club

Our League matches are almost finished for this season. We wish our Rohu team good luck in their next match.

Building work has commenced on the storage extension to the rear the Main Hall. This will replace the existing storage containers, and make life easier for all clubs in moving equipment into and out of our hall. May we thank all those who are helping with the work.

The Indoor Bowling Association annual dinner takes place on Friday 3rd. April next in the Stillorgan Park Hotel. Members wishing to attend should give their names to our Club Captain without delay.

Rector's Letter - February 2009

December was a busy month, as usual. On 15th December we had our annual ‘Turkey Drive’ in the main hall. We are very grateful to the ‘Whist Drive’ who presented the parish with a cheque for €1500.00. Thank you to George Furney who runs the drives each month and to all his helpers.

On Tuesday 16th the Irish Variety Ensemble Concert Brass Band had their Christmas concert which was followed on Saturday 20th by the Leinster Singers Christmas Concert. Both these events were delightful and were followed by refreshments in the small hall.

On the morning of the 20th the church was decorated for Christmas. Thank you to Janet Edgely and her helpers, the church looked lovely for the festive season. On the same day the Indian Marthoma Church had a Christmas Service in the Church with their Bishop present (they use our church for services on a fortnightly basis) and we had a group of people from Zimbabwe praying for their country in the small hall.

Sunday 21st saw our Primary School Carol Service along with our Sunday School nativity ‘sketch’. That evening we had our Nine Lessons and Carols. Thank you to all involved in providing the refreshments following both these services.

On the Sunday immediately after Christmas we had the baptism of Daniel Ademola Osho. His granny, Victoria is one of our longest standing African parishioners. We had a full church with the family’s relatives and friends dressed in colourful traditional African dress. Thank you to Victoria and her friends who provided the meal after the service.

On New Year’s Eve we had a memorial service for Arthur Gwynne who had died in Australia having lived there for many years. His Australian relatives wanted to have the service for his Irish relatives who include our parishioner Caitriona McCoy, daughter of past parishioner and artist, Oisin Kelly. It was nice to meet all the Kelly and Gwynne family who have all had a connection with St. Maelruain's.

The Christmas services were followed on New Year’s Eve by our midnight multicultural service to welcome in the New Year. Thank you to Rev Obinna Ulogwara for all his work in organising it. Tendai Madando of Christian Aid (and is also running as a councillor in South Dublin County Council elections in June) preached.

I attended a talk on the ever current issue of Palestine by Dr. Susan Hood, archivist and publications officers at the RCB library, which was thought provoking and informative and it inspired me to give a sermon on Palestine on Sunday 11th January.

On the afternoon of Sunday 18th January I was asked to take part in an interview on Radio Tallaght along with other local clergy on the subject of religion today.

I was delighted to attend a thanksgiving service in the home of our former Indian Churchwarden John Thomas on the anniversary of his illness. When John was struck down by his sickness his family and friends prayed continuously for his recovery. It was great to see him walking, although aided, and talking again.

Bowling Club

League matches have recommenced after the Xmas break. Also two teams were entered into a charity bowling night arranged by Dundrum Methodist Bowling Club, in aid of the Laura Lynn Foundation and the Childrens Sunshine Home. Congratulations to our team who reached the final but failed to take the winners prize.

A coffee morning was held on Sat. 31st. Jan. to say goodbye to our Bowling Club founder members Eileen and Stewart Whitten, who are moving to County Tipperary to be near their daughter Lynn. We will all miss them and we wish them both every happiness in their new home.

May we thank Alex and Muriel Bryan for opening their home for this occasion.

We held our Annual Dinner on Monday 12th January 2009 in the Osten Square Bistro, Glashaus Hotel. It was an excellent evening and we were delighted to welcome some old friends.

We held our Annual Dinner on Monday 12th January 2009 in the Osten Square Bistro, Glashaus Hotel. It was an excellent evening and we were delighted to welcome some old friends.

St Maelruain’s Mothers Union Project: SAOIRSE.

Many thanks to all for your January donations of tea and coffee which I delivered to SAOIRSE on Tuesday 13th, January.

For February, SAOIRSE would like SMA baby formula 0-6months, baby rice, wipes, or creams. If you are not attending our meeting on 9th February OR would like to help out…. donations can be left in the SAOIRSE basket in the porch.

Boys' Brigade

It’s hard to believe that it’s already February and we are beginning to prepare for our annual display on April 29th. Staff have been meeting to search for and discuss items so that the work can begin. We have had some new members since September, so it’s good to see the numbers grow each week. Plans are in hand for a trip to the cinema, as well as a visit from the Fire Brigade and a visit to the Garda station.

We are actively looking for new leaders for next September. Ideally, someone with some experience of Boys’ Brigade would be good, but training courses are ongoing throughout the year. What is required is a total commitment to attending Boys’ Brigade every Friday night, between 7pm and 10.30pm and to have a genuine interest in working with the boys and implementing the programme. It can be a very rewarding experience. If you are interested or would like more information, please phone John at 4522930 after 6pm.

Flower Guild

The flower guild had a coffee morning on January 24th, to say farewell to Eileen Whittenand to wish her and Stuart well, as they leave St. Maelruains and their home in Templeogue to start a new life near their daughter Lynn in Tipperary. Eileen organised the flower rota in St. Maelruains for more years than a lot of us can remember and was responsible for the church being decorated with fresh flower arrangements each week as well as the special seasons of Christmas and Easter. She was always there to lend a hand, to offer advice if one was a bit doubtful and to encourage everybody

There was a full turnout at the coffee morning and it was lovely to see past parishoners Lettie Morrow, Ruth Farrell and Margaret Mahon again . We all had the chance to catch up on news and to remember times past!

Janet Edgley thanked Eileen for all her hard work and wished her well. We will all miss Eileen, but no doubt her new parish in Tipperary will be calling on her expertise when they hear of her many talents, such as her beautiful voice and reading skills, always a joy to which to listen as well as her knowledge of flowers. Janet presented Eileen with two camellia shrubs to remind her of all her friends in St. Maelruains.

Many thanks to Janet also, who invited us all to her home for the occasion.

Whist

Our Turkey Drive was held on 15th Dec and while numbers were a bit down on previous years, it was a very enjoyable night.

Thanks to our helpers Hazel Walshe, Patricia Byrne and Madora also to my back up team Yvonne McGlynn and Sylvia Moody who looked after catering all year.

Thanks also to all who donated or brought items for our raffle or mince pies for the supper

This continued support enabled us to make our annual contribution to parish funds.

Since our last notes we have held our January Drive on the 19th and again numbers were small due to a bitterly cold night.

Thanks to Boswell for his Trojan work, it was much appreciated.

School News

Happy New Year from everyone here, we hope that it will be a healthy and happy year for everyone.

The amount of money raised for MS by the children doing the ReadaThon was €905.49, a fantastic effort and well done to all the readers.

The Christmas Bazaar went really well too, congratulations to the Parents’ Association for all the effort and hard work which they put into the event, a total of €1,469.90 was raised.

Our thanks once again to Tallaght Community Gardaí for bringing the Garda Band and Santa to visit us on Thursday 11th December, the children really enjoyed t and the treats!

On Thursday 18th December we had The Christmas Concert. Junior and Senior Infants put on a play with Mrs. Edel Beckett and Ms. Geraldine Healy choreographing. 1st and 2nd class, under the guidance of Ms. Caroline Rountree and Ms. Bernie Dixon, did an extract from the Sound of Music. 3rd and 4th class, with Ms. Annette Boles, did poems some of which were about Cats. 5th and 6th class performed some Christmas songs.

The School Christmas Carol Service, which was held on the 21st December, was lovely. The children sang and read beautifully. It was great to have so many staff and parents attending too.

This term started on Wednesday 7th January. 1st and 2nd class with Caroline and Bernie are going to Imaginosity, in Sandyford Industrial Estate on Friday 23rd January. They will be doing a Drama Workshop there.

We will welcome back 2 former pupils, Edel Twamley and June McKevitt, for work experience, at the beginning of February.

5th and 6th class are going to Croke Park to the GAA Museum on Thursday 5th February. They will be having a tour of the Museum and behind the scenes in the Stadium.

The individual Parent’s meetings will take place before the mid-term break. The mid-term break is 19th and 20th February.

Baptism

On Sunday 28th December Daniel, son of Samuel Osho and Mary Akindama, was baptised. It was lovely to see the church so full on the first Sunday after Christmas especially with the guests of the family dressed in the colourful traditional African dress. We welcome Daniel into God’s Christian family and pray for him and family

Ash Wednesday & Lenten Services

Ash Wednesday is on Wednesday 25th February. There will be a service at 8.00pm.

There will be a service at 8.00pm on each Wednesday of Lent.

Improved Amplification

Thank you to Brian Good who organised two cordless mics for use in the church and thanks also for all the work done on the amplification of the sound system. It really makes a big difference for the clergy, not having to deal with a cord and more importantly the sound is much improved for the congregation.

(Women's) World Day of Prayer

A (Women’s) World Day of Prayer planning meeting will take place in the Parish Centre on Tuesday Feb 10th at 8pm.

The (Women’s) World day of Prayer service for 2009 is on Friday 6th March in St. Mark’s, Springfield at 8.30pm. All welcome.

Offertory Envelopes

Offertory Envelopes are available for 2009. Please ask the Church wardens, the Rector or contact the parish office at 462 6006 if you would like to join Offertory Envelope Scheme

If you give over €250 to the parish per annum the parish can claim back from The Revenue Commissioners either 20% or 41% depending on your tax rate.

Easter Vestry

The Easter Vestry will be held in the Church on Sunday 19th April following a shortened Morning Prayer service,

The Easter Vestry is an opportunity for you to elect the Select Vestry (committee) to run the church for the coming year and also a chance for you to hear how your parish is doing.

Craft Group

A big thank you to the Craft Group for the money that they have raised for the Church Roof Fund with the profits that they have made on their crafts – Thank you to all involved. (Cards for all occasions are available at the back of the Church)

The Church Review Subscription is now overdue. If you have not already paid please forward payment (€40.00 - cheques made payable to Tallaght Parish Church) to the parish office as soon as possible. If you no longer want to subscribe please let the parish office know. You will be liable for the January and February editions.
