Thank goodness we have managed to keep the “Swine Flu” at bay. The new sanitizers which we installed during the summer are obviously helping. The children are particularly vigilant in their use.
The various field-trips which we went on during September went very well.
Ms. Caroline Rountree has taken over the Green Schools project while Mrs. Edel Beckett is on Maternity Leave. A new committee has been formed and has met for the first time this year already.
1st and 2nd class with Caroline went to Knocksink Woods on Friday 9th October.
Ms. Annette Boles is doing Early Irish Settlements at the moment and she took her 3rd and 4th class to the National Heritage Centre in Ferrycarrig, Co. Wexford on Friday 9th October. It’s a long trip but well worth it.
Ms. Mary Conroy, our National Educational Psychological Service (NEPS) psychologist will be working with us on Thursday 15th October on the Continuum Support to Staff Workshop.
The children in Junior and Senior Infants with their teacher Ms. Linda Morrow and Special Needs Assistant (SNA), Ms. Geraldine Healy are going to Tallaght Adventure Centre on Friday 16th October.
5th and 6th class will be going to Armagh Planetarium on Friday 13th November in conjunction with their project on Astronomy.
We have a little surprise organised for the children on Thursday 22nd so obviously we can’t let “the cat out of the bag” at this stage. Watch this space!
The children are involved in both, the MS ReadaThon and the Samaritan’s Purse, Operation Christmas Child, again this year.
A big thank you to Ms. Miriam Gibney who put the school forward for an Impact Award from GlaxoSmithKline, Miriam came to the school on Monday 12th October and presented us with a cheque for €300.00.
School will close for the mid-term break on Friday 23rd October at 12.00pm, re-opening on Monday 2nd November.

These notes were received in time for the Church Review Magazine deadline on 15th May. Hopefully the principal will give us an update in September.
The summer term is always a busy one and this year is no exception. Our Whole School Evaluation (WSE) report will be posted on the web eventually, with the holidays coming up it’s difficult to know whether it will be before or after the summer. The Board of Management (BOM) and staff were presented with a draft version orally on 31st March. We were quite happy with it.
We had a Special Needs Assistants review on Tuesday 5th May. A decision on our allocation of resources will be given shortly.
As usual we are involved in the National Spring Clean, unfortunately on the day we planned was so wet that we had to postpone it for a week. Thank you to those parents who helped.
The Department of Education and Science has called all Principals and members of the Special Education Teams to a seminar on, “Meeting the Needs of Students with Special Educational Needs through Individualised Planning.” This was on 7th May.
A very exciting concept called “Marine Dimensions” is coming to our school on Tuesday 12th May to show slides of marine life to the children in Junior Infants to 4th class. They will have a Touch-Pool with them, the children will get to handle some of the creatures. On Thursday 14th they will present the same show for the children in 5th and 6th class who will then go on “Safari” to Sandycove!
3rd and 4th class with Ms. Annette Boles are going to the Ark on Friday 15th to do a Dance and Percussion workshop.
On Tuesday 26th May, Ms. Caroline Rountree is taking 1st and 2nd class, with Ms. Bernie Dixon (SNA) to the Ark for a Fossil Art workshop.
Induction Day for the new children and their Parents who are coming to our school in September will take place on Wed 27th May.
Edel will be going on Maternity Leave on Thursday 28th May. We wish her every luck and we’re eagerly waiting to hear the good news in June! Edel’s replacement will be Ms. Karen Hendy.
The children in 5th & 6th class will be going on their school tour to Dalkey Quarry and Killiney Hill, they will be abseiling and orienteering! The rest of the school are all going to the Little Gym in Liffey Valley on 16th June.
There will be a School Development Planning day on Tuesday 9th June, the children will have the day off.
Thanks to the School Completion Programme the whole school will be going to the Civic Theatre for a production of Peter Pan on the 12th June. We will look forward to the treat!
The children in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class will be going to a Sports Day, organised by Citywise, on Thursday 11th June. Our School Sports Day will be on Friday 19th June, starting at 10.00am. There will be a football match between our school and St. John’s National School, Clondalkin on Thursday 24th June. Up St. Maelruain’s!
The Art Exhibition will take place on Thursday 25th June and the 6th Class Graduation will be on Friday 26th June. School will close for the summer vacation on Tuesday 30th June re-opening for the new school year on Monday 31st August.

School News
Well the big news of the month was definitely our Whole School Evaluation (WSE)! Ms. Eileen O’Sullivan spent the week of 23rd February with us. We await the report at this stage and hope that our school receives a positive and encouraging evaluation.
Our school uniform was introduced in September 1996. We have decided that it needs to be brought in to the 21st century and we are changing the colour of the polo-shirt to a rather fetching yellow. It looks lovely and the majority of the school community are happy with it. We are also using a new supplier and the parents will be able to buy the uniform directly from the shop rather than the school having to order for them. This will be a great help to our wonderful secretary, Ms. Karen Mooney. Karen is normally tripping over uniforms for June and September!
The children in Junior and Senior Infants with Mrs. Edel Beckett and Ms. Geraldine Healy, Special Needs Assistant (SNA) and Edel’s Mum, Mrs. Yvonne McGlynn went to the Tallaght Library on Monday 9th March for a bi-lingual Drama of “The Three Little Pigs,” it was enjoyed by all.
5th and 6th class are going to the Zoo on Friday 20th March. They are doing a project on Nature/Wildlife.
The Basketball Tournament organised by Tallaght Community Gardaà will take place on Tuesday 31st March in the National Basketball
The children in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class have been busy planting the various fruit and vegetables that were sent to all the schools this year from Agri Aware. It’s a really good project and the children love watching everything growing and of course finally eating them!
Once again we will be involved in the Skipathon this year. The money raised is for the Irish Heart Foundation.
School will close for the Easter Vacation on Friday 3rd April, re-opening for the summer term on Monday 20th April.

We have had a few changes over the summer, what summer, says you !!!
Ms. Marion Hefferon, our Home/School/Community Liaison Co-ordinator (HSCL) for the past 8 years has left us and gone to St. Thomas’ as a Resource teacher, job-sharing. We are really sorry to see Marion leaving, but ever grateful for all the excellent work she has done in the school.
We are pleased to inform you that we have found a very capable replacement as HSCL, Ms. Madeline Lynch. Madeline will reap the benefits of the brand new Parents’ Room which has just been completed. The Special Education Team (SET) Room is also completed and will be operational shortly.
We were also sorry to lose our part-time caretaker, Ms. Lesa O’Dowd who has taken her family out of the school as the travelling was getting too much for her. We wish Lesa and the girls all the best in the future. Lesa very kindly found a replacement for us and Ms. Amanda Lawlor started with us on Monday 1st September.
During the summer holidays Ms. Edel McGlynn got married and now wishes to be referred to as Mrs. Beckett. It was a great wedding, the staff can confirm that!!
The Parents’ meetings will take place during the next four weeks.
We were delighted to welcome 12 new children into Junior Infants this year and their parents of course. Anastasia Kychygina has returned to us in 5th class, so we have 80 children in the school now.
The children in 5th and 6th class are doing a project on Legends from Ireland and around the World, and are going to The Giant’s Causeway on Friday 19th September.
Ms. Jane Barnes, our Resource Teacher, is doing a training course in Reading Recovery, which will be of great benefit to the children under her care. The course will take a year so Jane will be absent for some half days to attend this.

Yes, it’s September and we are back to school, although you don’t normally hear from us this early in the year! However, I thought I’d let you know that at last the new building has started. It will be great to finally have a Parent’s room and a proper Learning Support / Resource Room! We do have a little problem though, the architect has informed us that we are short about €5,000. If you have any suggestions as to how we may raise this money or wish to make a donation to the school, we would be eternally grateful. Thank you, Iris. 452 7933

Edel is taking the Infants to Newgrange Farm on 10th April. The Infants with Edel, Ms. Caroline Rountree’s 1st and 2nd class and Ms. Annette Boles’ 3rd and 4th class are participating in the Skipathon, for the Irish Heart Foundation on Friday 11th April.
1st and 2nd class with Caroline and Ms. Bernie Dixon, (SNA) and 3rd and 4th class with Annette are going to Glenroe Farm on Friday 18th April.
The staff is attending an Active Playground Workshop on Wednesday 23rd April. We feel that the new games are badly needed for the play-times.
The school photographer will be coming on Thursday 24th April and we will be involved in the National Spring Clean on Friday 25th April. The children will be dressing up in “Fancy Head-Gear” for the event!
On Tuesday 29th April, our DEIS (Delivering Equality of Opportunity in Schools) cuiditheoir, Ms. Erica Mulholland will be speaking to the staff about the programme, Ready Set Go Maths.
Finally children from 5th and 6th class are participating in a Basketball Tournament, organised by the Gardaà on Wednesday 30th April, in the National Basketball Arena. Ms. Karen Mooney, our multi-talented secretary, coaches the Basketball Team.

School News March 2008
The first event that the children were involved in since we came back to school was during Christian Unity week, when we attended the Ecumenical Service in St. Maelruain’s Church, in Tallaght village. The children from 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class sang 2 songs and did a reading. This was a very worthwhile experience and the children sang beautifully.
It’s all systems go for Ms. Edel McGlynn and the Green School Committee. Edel has spent a huge amount of time putting together our “Application Folder,” well done to her. The children and parents on the committee are doing a great job too. We now have a Green Schools Code, selected by competition and written by Hannah Barrett.
“St. Maelruain’s School is green and cool
Recycle the waste without a trace
So go on give it a bash,
Take out the trash.”

Edel hopes to apply for our Green Flag before the 1st March deadline. Well done everybody, now watch this space!
This is the International Year of the Potato! Every school in the country has received a “Grow your own Potato” kit from Agri Aware; we planted our potatoes on Thursday 7th February at Assembly, they should be ready to harvest in June.
The 5th and 6th class “Bà Gnóthach” project is going very well. They have decided to do a Baking Project. They have called it “Baking Blasters.” Their slogan is “Baking Blasters, faster than light, we make ‘em just right.” They are doing a great job so far!
The children in 1st and 2nd class with their teacher, Ms. Caroline Rountree are going to the Civic Theatre on Friday 29th February to a production of “The Bus” by Maeve Ingoldsby and Philip Hardy. The theatre is within walking distance.
A football team coached by Ms. Karen Mooney, our secretary, took part in a Football Blitz event organised by the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) in the National Basketball Arena on Friday 8th February. Great fun was had by all. The team were given t-shirts and medals for participating.

Happy New Year to everyone from all the staff in our school; may it be a healthy and happy year for everyone.
We are coming to the time of year when we like to welcome back some of our past pupils on work experience. Thomas Duffy will be joining us at the end of the month.
Our architect, Ms. Ann Blackwell, sent us the planning notice to put up at the front of the school for the Parents’ Room and new Learning Support/Resource Room. Hopefully it will be going to tender soon and the building will commence when the weather improves.
The children in 5th and 6th class are taking part in an Enterprise Project called Bà Gnóthach, it’s a real learning experience for all of us and we’ll keep you up to date on the progress in the next notes.
When the class has decided what business they want to set up, market and hopefully make a profit from, it will involve some market surveying, business strategies, team work and financing. It should be very interesting. They have given us €100 to get started!
We will be involved in the Ecumenical Service again this year, for Christian Unity week, which will take place on Sunday 22nd January in St. Maelruain’s C. of I., in Tallaght Village.
The individual Parents meetings will take place before the mid-term break.
The mid-term break is Thurs 14th and Fri 15th February.

School News - December 2007
The Parents’ Association will be organising the Christmas Bazaar again this year. It will be held on Friday 7th December in the school hall. There will be a raffle also. The money which is raised at this event, helps to defray the cost of transport on the various field-trips that are undertaken
during the year.
The children from 6th class organised a Halloween Party for the school on Friday 26th October. It was a great success and the money raised, €258.85 was sent to the RTE People in Need Telethon. Well done to the class.
Phase 1 of the Food Dudes Healthy Eating Programme is now finished and we have entered Phase 2. The children each received a really smart pair of lunch-boxes one each for the fruit and vegetables which they bring in from home. It really is incredible to see the improvement that has been made. Let’s hope it continues.
No doubt you have noticed the publicity around the initiative being undertaken by the Office of the Ombudsman for Children called “The Big Ballot.” The whole school has been involved in this. It is an interesting idea whereby the children learn about the function of the Ombudsman for children and get an opportunity to vote on issues which are important to them. The findings will be published in due course.
The school collected 35 shoe-boxes for the Samarian’s Purse Operation Christmas Child Appeal. This is down on last year, but every little helps.
The ReadaThon for MS Ireland, is still on-going so we have not got a final figure as yet.
Our Home/School/Community Liaison Co-ordinator, Ms. Marion Hefferon ran a parenting course which was well supported. There will be a Christmas Craft Class during the month.
The Tesco Tokens collection went well this year and we have enough tokens to get the new indoor tennis net that we needed.
Ms. Annette Boles will be taking the children in 3rd and 4th class to the Helix on Thursday 13th December to see Alice in Wonderland. Ms. Edel McGlynn and Ms. Caroline Rountree will be taking the Junior and Senior Infants and 1st and 2nd class to see Santa and the Snowtown Meltdown in the Helix on Wednesday 19th December. The children in 5th and 6th class will be going to Newgrange Heritage Centre on 4th December.
The School Carol Service will be on Sunday 16th December.
Some of the classes are planning a concert on Thursday 20th December, so it’s going to be a busy run-up to Christmas!

School News - Oct-Nov '07
We are delighted to be able to tell you that we have appointed our new part-time Learning Support Teacher, Ms. Maree MacGuinness.
The Food Dudes Healthy Eating Programme is going down very well, the majority of the children are actually eating both the fruit and vegetables. The rewards are really “cool!”
We had our Harvest Assembly on Thursday 27th September. The children brought in lots of provisions which Rev. William Deverell brought to the Simon Community.
The children from 5th and 6th class went to the European Commission on Friday 28th September. It was a very interesting field-trip and they got lots of information for their projects. We went by LUAS which is a great asset to our school, we take it as much as possible when getting out-and-about.
The Start of Year Service, in Christ Church Cathedral, was very popular this year, most of the senior class attended.
Ms. Edel McGlynn and Ms. Geraldine Healy, Special Needs Assistant (SNA), will take the children from Junior and Senior Infants to Seán Walsh Park on Thursday 18th October for a Nature Walk. Let’s hope the good weather continues.
Once again the children from 3rd to 6th class have been invited to participate in the GAA Cross-country inter-schools event in Valleymount, Blessington on Thursday 25th October. Last year we were washed-out, surely it couldn’t happen again this year!
On Friday 9th November, 5th and 6th class will be going to the Planetarium in Armagh, this is always a great field-trip and the show helps them to really appreciate the skies above them.

School News - Oct 07
The start of the new school year is always a busy time in schools, but there’s a great buzz around the place with lots of happy faces! The sunshine certainly helps to lift our spirits. Our shared Learning Support Teacher, Ms. Breda Rouillier has been made permanent in her base school and we will be interviewing shortly for her replacement.
We are glad to have, Ms. Edel McGlynn, Ms. Caroline Rountree, and Ms. Annette Boles still in the classrooms and Ms. Jane Barnes is our Resource Teacher. Ms. Adrienne McKevitt, Ms. Geraldine Healy and Ms. Bernie Dixon are our Special Needs Assistants and Ms. Marion Hefferon is our Home/School/Community Liaison Co-ordinator. Of course our school would not be complete without our Secretary, Ms. Karen Mooney and our Caretaker Ms. Lesa O’Dowd. Great to have everyone back!
We were delighted to welcome in the new families into Junior Infants and 2nd class, everyone has settled in well.
This year we will be putting on an extension, the architect has drawn up the plans and we are looking forward to seeing them. The room will be used for Parents, HSCL and Resource.
The Breakfast Club, which is run by Lesa and the Homework Club, which is run by Annette starts on Monday 17th September. The School Completion Programme, which is co-ordinated by Ms. Emily Ryan finances these initiatives.
Marion will be running a course for parents called, “Take a Fresh Look at Parenting.” The course will start on Tuesday 25th September.
Edel and the Principal will be attending a seminar on Monday afternoon 17th September in relation to a Critical Incident Policy. Sadly it seems necessary in today’s world to have such a policy.
On Friday 21st September the Principal will be attending a Training Day in the Religious Education Programme, Follow Me.
Our school has been invited to participate in two exciting programmes during the academic year.
In October we will be part of the Food Dudes Healthy Eating Programme. Annette will be
co-ordinating this. The programme itself will last for 16 days during which the children will each receive fresh fruit and vegetables daily. There are lots of incentives and it should be fun as well as healthy. As a follow-up to our Golden Tree Project in June 2000 we have been invited by Alternative Entertainments to do an Arts’ Week in the summer term, it sounds really exciting, watch this space!
Edel is organising the new Green Schools Committee at the moment, we hope to get our Green Flag before the end of this academic year.
