Rector's Letter

Developing Children’s Ministry……….

Our curate Rev Obinna Ulogwara has been busy organising the Diocesan Multicultural Harvest in his role as Diocesan Chaplain to International Community. The service take place in St. Bridget’s in Castleknock on Sunday 12th October at 3pm.

He has been trying to get together a praise band and with the children, what he calls, a Choreographic Group (what I would describe as children doing actions to Christian songs with dance). They have been rehearsing in our hall on Saturdays and took part in our recent family service and were a great success. They will be meeting in the Hall on an on going basis

While rehearsing for the hour or so on Saturday afternoons the parents had to stay due to safeguarding trust / child protection policies. As the conversation flowed among the parents it came up that the current Sunday School teachers Thomas and Sourena Matthew are taking a break due to the birth of their first child, Nevin. service.. A couple of the mothers present volunteered to fill the vacancy. Chika, Obinna’s wife has very kindly offered to take these mother’s for Sunday School preparation on Saturday afternoons before the Choreographic Group meet.

We have two candidates for confirmation on Sunday 9th November at 11am following our remembrance service. The candidates are Sarah McAllister and Megan McKimm. Last year we had only one candidate who was confirmed in Whitechurch. This year the Archbishop will be coming as Megan has special needs.

It is heartening to see the evolvement of Children’s ministry in the parish . I would like to thank Obinna and Chika for all that they are doing to encourage the children and their parents.

God Bless. William

Harvest Reminders

Financial Update 2008

Roof Appeal
The parish received a loan of €80,000 from the Representative Church Body of the COI to go toward fixing the roof. In February we repaid €40,000 and the outstanding amount of €40,000 must be paid within 9 years which is not a very long period of time. Raised toward the Roof Appeal from January to August 2008 was €2,563.32.

Car Boot
Unfortunately due to the beautiful summer weather the income from the Car Boot Sales is down €2,000 on 2007.

Summer Sale
The Summer Sale raised €6,649.70 which is slightly down on 2007.
(Breakdown was in the September Losset).

Parish Giving
I’m delighted to report that the General Collection and Envelope Scheme are up on this period last year.

The Select Vestry would like to encourage more parishioners to consider giving through the Envelope Scheme in 2009.

If you are a PAYE tax payer and you donate a minimum of €250 during the calendar year the Parish can claim a rebate of the income tax you paid on your donation.

Donation Rate of Tax Income Tax Rebate
€250 20% €62.50
€250 41% €173.73

‘Remember this will not cost you anymore than your original donation.’

This year we have been able to claim tax relief of €4,293.37 based on donations received from Parishioners in 2007 through the Envelope Scheme and other traceable donations i.e. roof appeal, weddings, baptisms, Gift Day etc. Remember the minimum amount to be eligible is €250 which is just €5 per week. We will shortly be ordering a supply of envelopes for 2009 so if you would like to join the Envelope Scheme please let the churchwardens know now or contact the Parish Office at 462 6006.

Funding Raising
If you have any new ideas for Funding Raising please do not hesitate to contact me. Many thanks for your support throughout the year. - Jane Carroll, Hon. Treasurer.

Bowling Club

The Bowling Club re-opened after the summer break on Saturday 20th. Sept. - everyone is welcomed back for the new season.

A sincere thanks goes to Willie Doble for hosting our annual club barbeque on 28th. June, at his spacious new home near Saggart. Although a little breezy on the night, it was enjoyed by all.

Congratulations goes to our club Captain Billy Gould, who was elected President of the D.D.U.C Indoor Bowling Association at their recent AGM at Taney Parish Centre.

We would be delighted to welcome new members into the club, just come along Tuesdays or Saturdays at 7.30pm. and try your hand at bowling.”

A short meeting followed when the 2008-2009 Programme was announced (see below).

Thank you to Eileen, Mary , Ann Hendrickje and Iris for representing us at the Diocesan Festival Service in Arklow on Wednesday 10th September. Our banner was carried by Eileen, very appropriate, as Arklow is her home parish!.

School News

We have had a few changes over the summer, what summer, says you !!!

Ms. Marion Hefferon, our Home/School/Community Liaison Co-ordinator (HSCL) for the past 8 years has left us and gone to St. Thomas’ as a Resource teacher, job-sharing. We are really sorry to see Marion leaving, but ever grateful for all the excellent work she has done in the school.

We are pleased to inform you that we have found a very capable replacement as HSCL, Ms. Madeline Lynch. Madeline will reap the benefits of the brand new Parents’ Room which has just been completed. The Special Education Team (SET) Room is also completed and will be operational shortly.

We were also sorry to lose our part-time caretaker, Ms. Lesa O’Dowd who has taken her family out of the school as the travelling was getting too much for her. We wish Lesa and the girls all the best in the future. Lesa very kindly found a replacement for us and Ms. Amanda Lawlor started with us on Monday 1st September.

During the summer holidays Ms. Edel McGlynn got married and now wishes to be referred to as Mrs. Beckett. It was a great wedding, the staff can confirm that!!

The Parents’ meetings will take place during the next four weeks.

We were delighted to welcome 12 new children into Junior Infants this year and their parents of course. Anastasia Kychygina has returned to us in 5th class, so we have 80 children in the school now.

The children in 5th and 6th class are doing a project on Legends from Ireland and around the World, and are going to The Giant’s Causeway on Friday 19th September.

Ms. Jane Barnes, our Resource Teacher, is doing a training course in Reading Recovery, which will be of great benefit to the children under her care. The course will take a year so Jane will be absent for some half days to attend this.

Funeral

The funeral of Betty Black took place here in St. Maelruain’s on Wednesday 10th September. We extend our condolences to her family here in Tallaght, in Kill O the Grange and in Ashford.

Baptisms

On Sunday 21st September Lucy Rebecca Gibney daughter of Niall and Sandra was baptised.

On Sunday 28th September Jaleel Lawrence Olisalukwue Nwanze son of Grace and Austin was also baptised. We pray for Lucy, Jaleel and their families as they begin their Christian lives.

Weddings

On 3rd September Lesley Hughes and Theresa Maguire were married in St. Maelruain's. On 23rd September Jennifer O’Connell and Keith Gantley had the blessing of their marriage.

We wish both these couples every future happiness.

Engagement

Congratulations to David Bird and Eadaoin Ni Dubhabh who recently announced their engagement.

Harvest

Our Harvest service will take place on Friday 17th October at 8pm. The guest preacher will be Rev. Andrew McCroskery the new Rector to St. Bartholomew’s Clyde Rd, and former Rector of Youghal.

Children’s Harvest and GB enrolment (along with Gift day) will follow on Sunday 19th at the 11am Service.

Date for your Diary

The Christmas Sing Along this year takes place on Friday 28th November. Please make every effort to attend, you have been given plenty of notice!!

Gift Day (2008)

The Select Vestry has set Sunday 28th October (Children’s Harvest) as Gift day for this year.

As you can see from our Treasurer’s report we as a parish still have an outstanding debt following the work carried out on the Church roof last year. We are grateful to all who donated so generously last year and appeal for your continued support again this year.

We will be writing to each family with more information about how you can give. If you are a family with adult children living at home perhaps this would be an opportunity for them to give to the parish on a monthly basis.
