June 2012 News letter

June 2012
From the Rector

It’s been a busy few weeks with the run up to the Parish Summer Sale. I had four 6th class schools tours of the Church and grounds with pupils from St. Maelruain’s Primary School from Old Bawn . On 24th May I attended a street party to mark the 20th anniversary of the I.T.T. and the evening before I was invited along to the college’s social and society’s awards night. On 25th our own Primary School had an Open Day for all parents and prospective parents of the school and their families. The children had examples of their art work on display, performed dancing and singing which was followed by tea and coffee. It was lovely  to the children so involved in the school community and for the teachers to ‘see the fruits of their labour’.

We had our Summer Sale on Saturday 26th May.  I would like to thank Ronnie Scott for all his hard work in co-ordinating the sale and the raffle, it is very much appreciated. Thank you to all the helpers on the stalls and to those who gave items for the sale and to those who came and supported on the day. The first prize in the raffle, a TV, went to Lynn Fletcher, congratulation!

On the evening of the Sale we hosted a Church Drama festival with St. Killian’s Church, Kilnamanagh.  An informal evening with four simple drama pieces based on Bible themes. It was a lovely way to end a hectic day.

God bless,         William.

Weddings

On Saturday 5th May the wedding of Margaret Hickey and Stephen Minett took place here in St. Maelruain’s and on  Saturday  26th Ruth Dowling and Colin Ackrell  were married in the Church.  Congratulations to both couples, we wish you all the best for the future and all of God’s blessings.

Summer Sale Results

The results of the 2012 Summer Sale are as follows: Raffle: €1161, Furniture: €856.30, Books and DVDs: €436.90, Gifts: €215.96, Cakes & Groceries: €186.00, Entrance €227, Bottle stall: €262.45, Brick-a Brack €166.95, Plants: €105.00, Jewellery: €92:79, Teas: €270, Toys: €260.60, Sweets & Popcorn: €59.19, Indian Cuisine: €100, Donations: €450. As we go to print there have been more bits and bobs come in,  the total raised at the sale, so far, amounts to in the region of €5000. Well done to everyone involved!

Church Drama

Drama can be a powerful medium to communicate Christian truths as was vividly demonstrated last Saturday in a Church Drama  Festival, hosted jointly by St Maelruain’s and St. Killian’s Kilnamanagh.  Four pieces were performed by Parabalos, a cross-denominational drama group who specialize in producing Christian drama.  Key features of each piece were reading a scripture passage, acting a principle from each passage in a modern setting, each ending on a reflective note with music or silence.  These were as follows
‘Here I am Lord, send me’, re-telling the account of Jonah and his encounter with God
‘Waste or Worship?’, based on Mary anointing Jesus feet, performed to the model of ‘This is your life’
‘Open up!’  Bringing the challenge of Revelation ch3 of Jesus standing at our door, knocking.
‘Love is…..’ exploring 1 Corinthians Ch13 to portray attributes of love between people and Jesus’ love for us.

Mother’s Union

Our outing to Titanic Centre in Belfast was a resounding success…we were joined by parishioners, some Clondalkin members, friends and Bohernabreena ICA Members – and practically had a full coach.  Thank you to Valerie for arranging the outing with Marathon Travel.
Enjoy the summer break….and we will as usual announce our 2012-2013 programme in September.

Girl’s Brigade

We have just finished another very successful  and happy year. We had a wonderful Display showing off all the wonderful talents our girls have. They can skip, march, dance and sing.

The following were our main awards:

Scripture Cup: Alex Laughlin      1st Year Junior Scripture Plaque: Rachel Cummins      P.E. Cup: Fiona Monahan     Explorer Skipping Cup: Abby Phelan    Brigader Cup: Zoe Smart    Junior Cup: Jade Willoughby    Explorere Cup: Beth Gardiner   Under 5 Cup: Olivia Monahan

Most girls received their Badges and Service Broches for their continued support and time given to the company.

I would like to say ‘Thank you’ to all our leaders for their continued support and time given to the company.

We will now be closed for the summer and will re-open in September when we will be having our very special and exciting 40th year. All members will hear from me and any new girls will be very welcome. (if you need information please contact me at 295 3547.

Fields of Life Trip

I am going to Uganda with Fields of Life from 3rd  - 18th August. For the first week I will be a leader at a youth camp for teenagers who will be Leaving Cert. in age, in a high school near Kampala, the country’s capital.  I will be teaching some basic healthcare. We will then travel north to Lira where we will be painting and carrying out maintenance at another school.

On the 4th June, along with my Mum, I will be taking part in the Women’s Mini Marathon in order to raise funds. After the family service on 22nd July I will be doing the coffee as I have to raise €2000 for the trip with ‘Fields of Life’. I have left a basket in the church porch to collect biros, pencils and copy books to be used by the young adults during the camp outside Kampala. Thank you
– Amy Deverell.
