May 2016 Newsletter

May 2016

FROM THE RECTOR  On 7th April in my role as part time Chaplain of the ITT I was invited by the Chaplain of the College, Sr Bernadette Purcell, to a dinner also attended by Bishop Eamon Walsh and the director of the Priory Institute’s long distance learning in religious studies, Fr John Littleton. The dinner was held in the culinary student’s restaurant in the college, ‘Scholars’. We were also joined by the College President Tom Stone and the College Registrar, John Vickery. It was an enjoyable evening, with good food and company.

On Sunday 10th April we had our Easter Vestry following a shortened Morning Prayer Service. It was a chance to see how the parish is doing, there were reports from myself and the Parish Honorary Treasurer, Jim Bird. We elected a new Select Vestry for the coming year, please see below. I would like to thank all of those who serve on the Select Vestry, the Honorary Treasurer, the Secretary, Glebewardens and Churchwardens for their time and work throughout the year.

As mentioned as an upcoming event in the April Newsletter, a Thai dinner with report and videos by parishioner David Gibson and his friends, following their recent aid trip to Thailand, was held in the Small Hall on 16th April. A group of us sat around a big table and the evening was interspersed by food, talk and videos. They told us about the work that is being done in the orphanage, Ban Meata Children's Village run by the charity Mercy International. The children there are now thriving despite their background stories of hurt and hopelessness. David and his friends spoke of the fun they had with the children while entertaining them, in between the serious work of painting the orphanage! It was interesting to see the work that Mercy International do in Thailand and to hear about the trip, we also all enjoyed the Thai food. Thank you, David, for organising the evening.

On 19th we said goodbye to Alan Morris, lay minister with our neighbours in An Solas Methodist Church. Alan is being replaced by Rev Katherine Keogh, also Methodist minister in Lucan. While we are sad to say goodbye to Alan, we look forward to future fellowship with Katherine.

On the evening of 20th April there was an extraordinary Diocesan Synod in Athy to discuss a motion  and vote to prevent a bill being brought to the General Synod in May that would see six parishes from the Dioceses of Dublin and Glendalough being transferred to the Diocese of Meath and Kildare. The meeting was very well attended and there was an overwhelming vote in favour of bringing the motion to the Synod in May.

We are looking forward to our Summer Sale on 28th May, please do come along. It is one of our main fundraisers of the year and support from parishioners, family and friends is needed to make the event a success.

God Bless                                                                                                                                                                                William.

FUNERAL
The 8th April marked the sad passing of Benny Myers, much loved parishioner and former Sexton of St. Maelruain’s. There was a receiving service on Tuesday 12th April followed by his funeral service on Wednesday 13th April. We would like to extend our sincere sympathy to Benny’s children Margaret, Dorothy, Kathleen, Gladys, William, Ben, (Lesley, deceased), Corinna, to their extended family and friends.
