Crossroads is based in Dublin, a club for young Church of Ireland people. We have membership of approximately 70 people ranging in age form 25-40 with a mixed 50:50 male: female split.

The club plans a variety of activities each month including weekends away, go Karting, hill walking, horse/greyhound racing, bowling, pitch and putt, visiting historic buildings, theatre nights, musical nights, BBQs and social night out in Dublin and surrounding counties. We have a regular event where we meet on the last Thursday night of each month in the bar of Buswell's Hotel.

Rector's Letter - February 2008

A Word from William
On Saturday 15th Dec. the Church was the venue for the fourth Christmas Concert by Anne Featherstone, teacher in the Leinster School of Music, and her students the Leinster Singers. It always proves to be an enjoyable evening and was followed by refreshments in the Parish Hall.

On the same evening our bowling club had their Christmas dinner which Valerie and I attended. It was nice to have the opportunity to congratulate the teams on their competition successes of last year.

On Sunday 16th at our 11am service our Primary School Carol Service along with their principal Iris McMenamin who accompanied the children on the piano. There was a larger than ever attendance of parents which was great to see.

That night we had our Nine Lessons and Carols service which traditionally has become an evening that we are joined by people from the wider community and by friends of the parish. As always, the service was enjoyed by all. Thank you to those who decorated the church and provided refreshments after the service.

I attended the Indian Marthoma congregation’s Carol Service, which was conducted in St. Maelruain's. After the service they showed a film, which aired in Indian TV on Christmas Day, about Indians in Ireland and featured shots taken of St. Maelruain's and various other locations around Dublin and Wicklow.

In addition to our Christmas services, we had our second New Year’s Eve service at 11pm. Traditionally we Irish get together with our family and friends on New Year’s Eve, but for those who may be thousands of miles from home New Year’s Eve can be a lonely experience. It was an enjoyable service. Thanks to Rev. Obinna Ulogwara who led the African singing and to Rev. Horace McKinley, who very aptly reminded the Indians that the ‘wise men’ came for the East

On 23rd January during Christian Unity Week we had a service in the Church with approximately 100 local secondary school children along with 30 or so of our own primary school students

It was great to see the Christian Unity service in St. Mark’s for the 1st time in recent years on Sunday 27th January.

Table Tennis

The table tennis club re-opened in mid-January after an extended Christmas break due to examinations that were taking place in the main hall. The club is delighted to have attracted a number of new members and club nights are buzzing! We always have room for new players of all standards so if you come along you will be very welcome.

This year we have two teams competing in the United Churches Table Tennis League. The first team is in Division 1 and comprises Andrew Seymour, David Gibbons and Sharon Gibbons while the club’s second team plays in Division 2 and comprises Bobby Wilson, David Gould and Stuart Gould. Unfortunately, Stuart Gould picked up an injury playing soccer and the club wish him a speedy recovery. We would like to thank those players who have acted as substitutes for Stuart.

On Saturday 26th Jan., twelve members of the table tennis club competed in the annual UCTTL championships. This was a record number of members to have played in this tournament from our club. All those who played enjoyed the day.

Congratulations to Claire Burke and Anthony Iyere for getting to the finals of a number of competitions (finals to be held in Raheny on Tuesday 29th Jan.).

Finally, anyone interested in playing table tennis please come along to the main hall on Thursday nights from 8pm. Andrew Seymour, Hon. Secretary.

Women's World Day of Prayer 2008

A Women’s World Day of Prayer planning meeting will take place in the Old Hall on Thursday 21st February 2008 at 8pm. There will be a practice in St. Aongus on Thursday 28th at 8pm. The women’s world day of prayer service for 2008 is on Friday 7th March in St. Aongus at 8pm.

Memorial Service

On 5th January a memorial service for the life of Lil Brown took place here in St. Maelruain's We express our deepest sympathies to Janet Edgely and family on their loss.

Tea Rota for Family Service

There is a Rota in the Church Porch to sign to volunteer to help with tea / coffee after the family service each month. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Think about helping out one Sunday a year, the more people on the Rota, the less work for everyone!

Ash Wednesday & Lenten Services

Ash Wednesday is on Wednesday 6th February. As this is also the First Wednesday of the month there will be a service as usual at 11.30am with Holy Communion and laying on of hands for the sick. There will also be an Ash Wednesday service at 8.00pm.

There will be a service at 8.00pm on each Wednesday of Lent.

Marriage Blessing

On Saturday 29th December, we had a marriage blessing.

We wish Grace and Austin Nwanze every happiness and all of God’s blessing for their future.

Craft Group

We had a terrific response to our request for old Christmas cards in January as the cards came from far and wide. We would like to thank everyone for donating so many of their cards to the Craft Group. We hope to come together over the coming months and will enjoy creating new designs from old.

Christmas Sing Along raised funds

It’s seems like a distant memory now, but the Christmas Sing Along was a great success and the sum of €2,160.50 was raised. Ronnie Scott would like to thank all those who donated raffle prizes, helped sell tickets, bought tickets, helped on the stalls, worked on crafts, assisted with the mince pies and beverages, helped set up and tidy up and anyone else who gave up their time and effort to make this event such a success. A big thank you to all involved!

Mothers' Union: Change to February programme

In December we had a demonstration of cookery from our Indian Parishioners. This was very good as we were given names of shops where we could purchase special items for this type of cuisine. Best of all, there were samples!

Please note that there is a change in February’s programme. We hope to go to the Tallaght Civic Theatre to see a play called ‘On Rafferty’s Hill”.

School News

Happy New Year to everyone from all the staff in our school; may it be a healthy and happy year for everyone.

We are coming to the time of year when we like to welcome back some of our past pupils on work experience. Thomas Duffy will be joining us at the end of the month.

Our architect, Ms. Ann Blackwell, sent us the planning notice to put up at the front of the school for the Parents’ Room and new Learning Support/Resource Room. Hopefully it will be going to tender soon and the building will commence when the weather improves.

The children in 5th and 6th class are taking part in an Enterprise Project called Bí Gnóthach, it’s a real learning experience for all of us and we’ll keep you up to date on the progress in the next notes.

When the class has decided what business they want to set up, market and hopefully make a profit from, it will involve some market surveying, business strategies, team work and financing. It should be very interesting. They have given us €100 to get started!

We will be involved in the Ecumenical Service again this year, for Christian Unity week, which will take place on Sunday 22nd January in St. Maelruain’s C. of I., in Tallaght Village.

The individual Parents meetings will take place before the mid-term break.

The mid-term break is Thurs 14th and Fri 15th February.

Boys' Brigade

It’s hard to believe that we are into our last session and are heading for our annual display. Christmas and the sponsored night hide, which took place on the wettest and coldest night one could imagine, seem a long time ago now! Well done to all the juniors and company section for an almost full turn out.

Both scripture exams have now taken place and we await results from them. Many thanks to the Rector who attended each Friday night and took bible class with both Junior and Company sections. We are very grateful for his help throughout the year.

Anchor Boys went to the Lambert Puppet Theatre recently to see Aladdin. No doubt they also had a great time at this popular venue. – Regina Donoghue.

Bowling Club

We held our Christmas Bowling dinner in the Plaza Hotel on Saturday 15th December and a very good night was had by all our members. We thank Ann & Denis Kane for arranging the dinner.

We wish both our Miller and Hope Team the best of luck when they go into the next round of their Competitions. We also send good wishes to the Price & Rohu Teams for the rest of their Competitions.

We would like to thank Dundrum Methodist for inviting us to their Christmas tournament on Friday 28th December. Our Club members enjoyed themselves very much and it was nice to participate for a very worthy charity.

Badminton Club

Badminton re-opened after the Christmas break on 22nd January and we were delighted to welcome a new member, Ellen, who joined us on our first night back. We hope Ellen enjoyed her few games of badminton and the chance to get to know a few new friends.

We were very sorry to hear that one of our members, John, was admitted unexpectedly to hospital at the end of January and we hope and pray that he will soon be restored to good health. We will miss him on a Monday night.

Finally at the start of another year if anyone is interested in taking up badminton you are very welcome to drop down on a Monday night to try it out. Kathleen McEndoo – Hon. Sec.

Whist Drive

Since our last Losset, we have held two Drives. The first one on Monday 17th December with 15 full tables in attendance (a record) and the second one on Monday 21st January in the small hall with 13 full tables (a tight squeeze).

A special word of Thanks to Gail Sheridan who volunteered her services at our Christmas Drive and did trojan work and to Patricia Byrne who helped all year and has agreed to assist again in 2008.

Thanks also to my back up team of Sylvia Moody and Yvonne McGlynn, who look after the catering each month and also George and Hazel Walshe who help me prepare the Hall.

A big thank you to parishioners and friends who donate raffle prizes each month which enable us to make a donation to parish funds each year.

Again your continue support is much appreciated and our next Drive will be held in the small hall on Monday 18th February at 8pm. - Hon Sec. George Furney.
