November 2019
FROM THE RECTOR I attended the Remembrance Mass for
members of Tallaght Garda on Sat 12th October at the Station. It was
Garda Andrew Callaghan 20th anniversary and a tree was also planted
in memory of Garda Pat Reynolds.
We had a lovely Harvest Sunday on 13th
October, beginning with our morning services and then followed by our service
at 3.30pm when Frank Sage spoke to us on the work of ‘Storehouse’ who
anonymously make up food hampers that are given locally in the Tallaght area.
Thank you to Regina and the ladies (we had
lots of help this year) who decorated the Church, they out do themselves year
on year, it really was beautiful. Thank you also to Jacinta, Marie and Adrienne
for providing the Harvest supper following the 3.30pm service.
We were saddened to hear of the death of Andrew O’Donnell
who worked next door in Fanagans Funeral Directors. Andrew looked after
numerous parishioners at a time of bereavement over the years and we extend our
condolences to Andrew’s family, friends and work colleagues.
On Saturday 19th
Mothers’ Union held a fashion show in the Talbot
Hotel, Stillorgan. Three of our African Mums, Nenna, Patience and Grace modeled
the African MU Mary Sumner skirts, they looked fabulous and also wore stunning
traditional headdress.
Auxiliary Bishop of Dublin Eamonn Walsh announced his retirement at the
end of September and invited myself and Valerie for a farewell lunch for priest
and sisters on Friday 25th October. I am sorry to see Bishop Eamonn
go as he always included me and wish him well in his retirement.
We have now had a couple of Taize Services, held on 4th
Saturday of each month, since September, as part of the local Vine initiative. The service is informal giving people the opportunity to give
their opinion about the reading and also giving people the chance to reflect
during the meditative style music. I am hoping it will be an alternative
service for people who might be busy on a Sunday morning, the service is
followed by tea / coffee at the back of the church giving people a chance to
have fellowship after the service without standing outside in the Churchyard in
the cold evenings. God Bless William

MOTHERS UNION We had a great day on Saturday 12 October at
Newbridge House out near Donabate. On arrival at the house we had a
welcome cup of coffee and then had a very interesting tour of the house which
was originally owned and built by the Anglican Archbishop of Dublin in
1736! It is now owned by Fingal County Council but the family who bought
it from the Archbishop’s family in 1985 still maintain an interest in the
house. We had lunch and walked round the farm which covers 30 acres! On our way
home we called in to Lucan parish Craft Fair which is organised by Rev Avril's
husband Fred. We had a great day and
were blessed with beautiful weather.
Our November meeting is on Monday 11th and will be a talk on
First Aid by a member of St John's Ambulance at 8pm in the Small Hall. Tea
rota: Mary Lucas and Hendrikje Mahon. All are welcome so please feel free to come
along.
Tallaght mothers union are due to be in Christ Church
Cathedral for Holy Communion Thursday 7th November at 11.15am. The Diocesan Council
meeting is on at 7.30pm on Thursday 21st November in the Magheogh.
Friday 13th December Snow White in the Civic Theatre 6.30pm meeting at 5pm for food before the show. Advance notice as I need to confirm numbers with the theatre very soon.
Saoirse are looking for toilet rolls for November.
Thanks very much – Valerie
GIRLS BRIGADE The 26th Co. Girls Brigade are
deeply saddened by the recent passing of their founder, former Captain, Company
Patron, and wonderful friend, Carol Fox.
Many
of you will know Carol through Girls Brigade.
The Girls Brigade ran deep in Carol’s veins as her Mum enrolled her at
the early age of 2 years old, in 1951.
Her love of GB grew from there and she founded The 26th Co.
St Maelruain’s Tallaght in 1973, where she was Captain for 40 years. Over the years, she was known and loved by
the girls and their families for her enthusiasm, commitment, encouraging
spirit, and an infectious sense of fun. Her attention to detail and
organisation of the Annual Display always made for great night’s entertainment
at the end of the season.
Although
she resigned in title a few years ago, her dedication to the organisation and
to the girls never lessened, and she was a core part of the Company to the very
end. She made such a difference to the
lives of so many girls who went through Brigade, as a role model of kindness,
compassion and caring.
Her
involvement in the Girls Brigade also meant the Tallaght Parish held a special
place in her heart, and she could be found manning the tea stall at the Parish
Fete every year, where her baked goods were legendary. Carol would be there
doing whatever had to be done, from the serving up of the
tasty treats to cleaning up afterwards and the washing up.
Carol
was always full of energy and willing to lend a helping hand. She loved flower
arranging and was delighted to get involved in the St. Maelruain’s Flower
Festival back in 2013. We all remember the variety of flower arrangements and
splashes of colour that filled the church.
Our
lasting memories of Carol will always be a friendly smile for everyone, a
wonderful sense of humour, her unconditional generosity and a huge heart, her
presence was felt by all. Carol made
many lifelong friends in the Girls Brigade and St. Maelruain’s over the years.
For
all of us in GB, for her family and her friends, we know that although she is
no longer with us, someone as special as Carol will never be forgotten.

BOYS BRIGADE The
boys recently attended the Founders Day celebrations in Castleknock Church and
Parish. We had a great turnout and the boys really enjoyed the games and
service. A big thank you to the parents for their support. Boys’ Brigade
did not run the bank holiday weekend to allow the boys time to prefect their
trick or treating for Halloween.
With Halloween done
and dusted and many a sugar coma I’m sure, we are now looking forward to our
build up to Christmas. We have lots of exciting games, arts and crafts and
badge work planned for the new session. Our annual enrolment service will be
taking place on Sunday 17th November
with some light refreshments afterwards. The night of the Christmas Sing-A-Long
on the 29th November
will be a non-uniform night and there will be lots of festive fun and treats.
We will be finishing
up for Christmas on Friday 14th December
2019 with our annual Christmas party. More details to follow nearer the time.
Finally we have been delighted to welcome a number of new boys to the 2nd Dublin this year which is fantastic.
As I mentioned before we are actively looking for new boys and as the only
Company on the south side of the city we would be delighted to welcome any members
no matter the Parish. If you’re interested please contact the Parish or email: 2nddublinbb@gmail.com.
I will be delighted answer any questions you may have. Evan
TABLE TENNIS We play on Thursday nights in the Parish

FLOWER GUILD
Thank you to all the
ladies who came along to decorate the Church for the Harvest. We
had many kind donations of flowers, veg and fruit from parishioners. Thank you
also to William and Valerie who supply us with tea and coffee as we work. The
fruit and veg were passed on to Saoirse, the women’s refuge.
