MAY 2014
FROM THE RECTOR
‘Now and Then’ ran their production of ‘Jesus
Christ Super Star’ between 1st and 4th April in the
Priory. It was a joint production with St. Maelruain’s as parishioners were
involved and they also used our Church, Main Hall and Small Hall during their
preparations and rehearsals. They then showed a DVD of the production in the
Main Hall on 13th which was
enjoyed by all involved.
I preached my first
sermon in my role as Canon in Christchurch Cathedral on 6th April. I
did the same as I do in Tallaght working my way through the reading which on
that day was ‘the raising Lazarus’. As with all things new, I was a bit nervous
but my prayers were answered as the congregation seemed to appreciate the
sermon.
On the 3rd
April we had our Girl’s Brigade display. Well done to Fiona Monaghan on her
first display as Captain, read her report below. On 12th April the
Boy’s Brigade had their display. John Donohue retired as Captain and he was
presented with a crystal engraved plate, there was also a presentation to his
wife Regina who
has assisted John over the 10 years that he was Captain. Best wishes to the new
joint Captaincy of Susan Carroll and Evan McAuley.
Our Holy Week and
Easter Services went well. Thank you to Janet Edegely and the ladies who so
beautifully decorated the church for Easter, it really was lovely.
As many of you will
know by now, my Dad, Bill Deverell, passed away on 22nd April. The
family feel that we had a bonus year with him after my Mum died in February ‘13.
My dad was suffering from Alzheimer’s and when my Mum was alive it was
difficult to have a conversation with her that included my Dad so it was good
to have the opportunity to give him our full attention. I am grateful to the
parishioners of Tallaght for their understanding while I had my Dad sit with me
in Church and to Lionel who helped him. His funeral was a celebration of his
life and I was touched to see so many parishioners, members of the Marthoma Church, neighbours and former curate
Canon Obinna Ulogwara whom African Parishioners had invited to attend.
On the Monday of Holy
Week Valerie learned that her previous surgery to repair her broken hip was not
successful and she has had to undergo further surgery for a hip replacement 11
weeks after the initial accident. Thankfully the recovery period should be more
straight forward. Thank you to all for your concern. God bless, William.

A presentation was made to Captain John Donoghue by Canon William Deverell. John is retiring from the company having being involved as an officer and Captain since 1997. Canon Deverell thanked John for his help and dedication during his time with the company and his wife Regina who has been Hon. secretary for the same number of years. John, in turn, thanked Canon William and the Select Vestry for their kindness and help and support through the years. He also thanked and paid tribute to the great group of leaders who have worked with him.
The staff had put together a tribute of their own for the occasion for which John and Regina were very appreciative. He wished the company the best for the future and introduced the two acting Captains for the next session, Evan McAuley and Susan Carroll. Evan and Susan are both long standing officers of the 2nd Dublin Co., and are well capable and qualified to bring the company forward for the future. He wished them well in their new position.
Boy's Brigade will reopen on September 19th.
THE GIRL’S BRIGADE The 26th Company Girls Brigade St Maelruains Tallaght held their 41st

were the President of Girls Brigade Ireland, the National
Vice-President of Girls Brigade, the National Director of Girls Brigade, and
friends and family of the Company. The Captain and leaders will be taking
a well earned rest over the summer, but will be fit and ready for the new Girls
