October 2015 Newsletter

FROM THE RECTOR   On 1st September I gave an illustrated talk to the Pauline Circle on Christchurch Cathedral. I have given illustrated talks in previous years but as we have moved our Bible Study Group to a Tuesday evening I will no longer be available on a Tuesday to give my annual talk.

The Tree of Hope organization held a candlelight vigil for World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10th. The vigil took place at Dodder Valley Park opposite Ahern’s Pub at 9pm, (Old Bawn / Firhouse Rd) just as it started to get dark. The aim of the vigil was to remember loved ones sadly gone too soon through suicide and to provide support to people living with mental health issues. There was a great turn out and many people brought framed pictures of their loved ones who have passed away, to show their love and support.

I know it’s truly ‘back to school’ every year when I attend induction week in the I.T.T. in my role as part time chaplain to the college. The week of 7th – 11th was spent in the college making myself available to students starting 1st year in the college, often an unnerving time for young people as they leave the familiarity and structure of their secondary schools and begin college life.

Tallaght Lions Club launched a Suicide Information Help Card and a Leaflet on Bullying in the Maldron Hotel on 16th September. The Lions Club are also involved in an Emergency Information Scheme called ‘Message in a Bottle’ which simply directs the emergency services to information stored in a plastic bottle which is kept in the fridge; vulnerable people or those with a medical condition can enter their details on the form inside the bottle which can be easily accessed in an emergency. The Lions Club supply these bottles free of charge.

I attended The Tallaght Guild of the ICA Annual Memorial Service for past members on 24th September in Tymon North Community Centre. The service was followed by their annual Arts and Crafts awards. The craft award was won by our own Janet Edegly, incoming president of the Tallaght Guild for the coming year. Well done Janet, your work was beautiful.

We have had a number of school tours in the past month, we had four 6th Classes, students from St. Maelruan’s (note the different spelling!), over a four day period and then we had a visit from Scoil Iosa. I enjoy the young people and their questions where I try to point out the differences and similarities between our two denominations.

On Saturday 26th the Priory Retreat Centre in the Village had an Open Day which gave people an opportunity to sample some of the programmes they run throughout the year, including mindfulness, zen, pottery, meditation etc. and it also gave a chance for people to visit the tower, gardens and to walk the Labyrinth with tea, coffee and scones provided throughout the day. Just a reminder, that Orlagh Retreat Centre is also running courses before they close at the end of the year.

As this goes to print we are looking forward to our Harvest Service on Sunday the 4th of October 3.30pm  followed by tea in the Small Hall.

God bless                   William

WEDDING   The marriage of Paul McEvoy and Aisling Morris took place on Saturday 19th September. We wish Paul and Aisling all of God’s blessings as they start their married life.

TALLAGHT CHURCHES TOGETHER are holding a free Concert of Hope in the Maldron Hotel on Thursday 19th November at 7.30pm with the various church music groups taking part, all welcome!

PAINTING OF THE CHURCH Bill Grimson, a parishioner from a neighbouring parish, kindly donated a painting of the Church that is around a hundred years old. It’s a lovely painting which depicts the tower covered in ivy and the graveyard more heavily planted. The painting is hanging in the Small Hall, maybe a gentle reminder to some of the hall users that there is a church attached to the hall!

COME & C   Diocesan Come & C day (looking forward as Christians and Community) met in The High School on Saturday 12th September. Following on from that meeting each Rural Deanery in the Diocesan will be having meetings to see what initiatives can be introduced to invite people back to church.

Our Rural Deanery are meeting in the Louis Fitzgerald Hotel, Naas Rd (beside Joel’s Restaurant) on Wednesday 7th October at 8.00pm Please contact the Rector if interested 086 803 0239

The Diocesan survey relating to Come and C can be read on line at http://dublin.anglican.org/dioceses/index.php.

MOTHER’S UNION Our Opening Service was held on Monday 14th September with. Rev Avril Bennett officiating. Avril spoke to us on the very many ‘hats’ MU members wear! Thank you Avril. The service was followed by a short meeting announcing the Programme for the coming year.

Some of us attended the Diocesan Festival Service held this year in Whitechurch on 15th September. It is amazing to see a church full of Members and of course the colourful banners and singing. Tradition being kept alive.

On Saturday 17th October we plan to visit Kilmainham Jail. However we have heard queues are very long so if there is a long queue on the day, we will cross the road to Royal Hospital, Kilmainham.
