Rector's Letter - A Word From William

The church was the venue for the I.T.T. business prize giving on 4th November. Local businesses who donate the prizes award them to the students in the pleasant surroundings of the church. It is lovely to see the church filled with local young people and their families. The ceremony was followed by a reception in the college.

On Sunday the 11th November we had our Confirmation Service preceded by act of Remembrance. We were delighted to welcome the Archbishop this year for confirmation as last year we had only one candidate who joined the candidates in Whitechurch. This year we had two candidates and as one of them has special needs the Archbishop was willing to come to St. Maelruain's despite the small number. It was a pleasure for me to prepare Megan McKim and Sarah McAllister almost on a one on one basis and it was also a pleasure for the bishop to confirm them especially as he was able to spend time with the families after the service when we were over in the hall for tea / coffee.

On Monday 20th in my role as part time chaplain to the I. T.T. I was invited by the Dublin Institute of Technology to a discussion with the Church of Ireland chaplains of Trinity College and UCD in DIT Merrion Square, along with the RC Chaplains, on how to ‘reach’ students. It was interesting to hear the viewpoints of other chaplains.

On Friday 21st I attended the ‘Tallaght Person of the Year’. This year the recipient was Gerry Bates. Gerry is a R.E. teacher in Old Bawn Community College. He was awarded this honour for his work in the community and as chairperson of the board of the drug rehabilitation programme in St. Dominic’s contact food.

At the end of the month I was interviewed by three groups of Our Lady’s Templeogue secondary school transition year students on the differences between the Church of Ireland and the Roman Catholic Church. As I told them, in my opinion the differences are more on how the churches are run by their respective higher archery that in what we believe.

May I take this opportunity to wish all the readers of the Losset a very joyous Christmas and in this time of recession maybe, a more reflective one, and a healthy and happy New Year.

School News

The run-down to Christmas, where has the year gone to!

The Halloween Party organised by the children in 6th class went well and the children raised €174.90.

Back after the mid-term and Joanne from Dublin Bus was very good with the children from 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class. She explained about the dangers of vandalism on the buses and showed a very informative DVD to them.

Once again this year 35 boxes were donated for The Samaritan’s Purse, Christmas Shoe-Box Appeal. The money from the ReadaThon has not been brought in as yet.

The children from 5th and 6th class will be going to the new South Dublin Arts Centre, on 26th November for a tour and workshop on Myself and the Wider World. The Centre will open to the public in 2009.

The big fund-raiser for the School, the Christmas Bazaar and Raffle will take place on Friday 5th December from 11.30am – 1.00pm. All are welcome, so if you’re free come and support our school please.

The children in Junior and Senior Infants with their teacher Mrs. Edel Beckett and Special Needs Assistant (SNA) Ms. Geraldine Healy and 1st and 2nd class with their teacher Ms. Caroline Rountree and SNA Ms. Bernie Dixon are going to the Helix for a production of Where is Rudolph? on Friday 12th December.

There will be a Christmas Concert on Thursday 18th December in the School Hall from 12.00pm. All are welcome to attend.

3rd and 4th class, with their teacher, Ms. Annette Boles and 5th and 6th class with their teacher and SNA Ms. Adrienne McKevitt are going to the Civic Theatre on Friday 19th December for a production of Sleeping Beauty.

The children will be attending the service in St. Maelruain’s Parish Church on Sunday 20th December for the School Carol Service.

Boys' Brigade

We had our enrolment service in November, when Officers and members were enrolled for this year. Rev. Avril Bennet preached about the different "gifts" we are given in life and how we should not be afraid to use them and how we are all special in our own way. The service was very enjoyable and we are grateful to Peter O'Callaghan and the 1st Dublin Co. band for playing on the day. The service would not be the same without their input and we are lucky to have them bring their "gift" of music to the church for our service each year.

On the night of the Christmas fair, some of company and junior section went on a night hike to the Hellfire Club. Turnout was disappointing, but those that attended were rewarded with a crisp, clear night, making for great views of the city lights, shooting stars and lots of air traffic coming and going to the airport.

The boys were transported to and from the event by the Garda Community Unit, thanks to Garda Jim Fleming from Tallaght Garda Station. Many thanks to John and Terry, Alex Graham and to parent Anthony Barrett for helping to look after the boys on the night.

We will close on December 12th, when we are expecting a visit from a very special person. Let's just say " You better watch out , you better not cry, you better not pout, I'm tellin you why".............guess who is coming to B.B.?

The staff of the company would like to wish you all a very happy Christmas and good health and happiness for 2009.Early in the new year, there will be a five a side football competition for juniors. Anchor boys will be going to the Lambert Puppet Theatre on January 17th.

Bowling club

Members are busy playing League matches at present, and doing well. We wish our Hope Team good luck as they play Clonkeen Club on 7thJanuary next in the second round.

Many thanks to Denis & Ann Kane for arranging our Christmas Dinner in the Plaza Hotel, a night which is always enjoyed by all.

Our Club Members donated gifts and goodies for hampers for the Parish Christmas Evening on 28th November, in aid of the Church Roof Fund. Thank you to all who donated.

The Club closes in 16th Dec. for the Christmas break, opening again on 10th January 2009.

Whist Drive

Our November Drive was held on Monday 17th again with a full house. Thanks to Noelle Lewis for assisting us on the night. Also thanks to all who donate items for raffle each month. They are much appreciated.

I would be most grateful if anybody could help us with some mince pies for our December Turkey Drive which takes place on Monday 15th in the parish centre at 8.00pm. Thanks to the badminton club who give up this night each year.

Lastly congratulations to Boswell and family on the birth of his daughter recently.

Mothers' Union

Our last meeting on Monday 10th November was very enjoyable and fruitful – lovely and encouraging to have so many suggestions and ideas to choose from! Following a brainstorming session we decided our branch project challenge should be SAOIRSE Women’s Refuge, Tallaght Village (www.saoirsewomensrefuge.ie) Our aim going forward is to foster an ongoing relationship with this local centre.

Following discussion with them, we are undertaking to provide simple needs of the refuge by asking members and indeed parish families interested to donate or to bring along a low cost household item specifically requested to our monthly meeting (from toothbrushes/toothpaste/pack of biscuits, etc.)

At our next meeting on Monday 8th December at 8pm one of the Managers of SAOIRSE will be coming to update us on their work and accept our first batch of gifts. They are so very grateful for the support we plan to give them.

For the Christmas season they have asked for small gifts suitable for teenagers aged 13-17 so can we ask each person planning to attend to bring along a suitable item to hand over on the evening OR items can be handed to any of our members.

PLANNING AHEAD !! Do you deserve a treat after coping with the Christmas season? We will be having our New Year celebration night out on Monday 12th January….dining out together in a venue affordable and suitable for anyone wishing to come along…..we extend a warm invitation to old and new faces to join with us ….to enable us book a suitable venue, please let one of our members know or phone Valerie or myself before 8th December.

The Mothers Union Dublin Diocese supply items for Premature babies to Dublin Hospitals on an on goingbasis, these are greatly appreciated. Do you have spare wool? Do you or any member of your extended family knit?

Please ring the parish office (462 6006) to obtain knitting patterns for matinee jackets or baby hats or contact myself.

Finally, our love, thoughts and support are with those known to us who have very seriously ill family members. Miriam Gibney

Funeral

The funeral of Joan Hooper took place in St. Maelruain's on Tuesday 2nd December. We express our deepest condolences to her husband David and her children Elaine, Carol, Gary and Tracey.

Christmas Sing Along

We had a lovely night on the 28th November at our Christmas Sing Along. Thank you to those
who attended and helped make the night such a success. We were delighted to be entertained by the Music Group, Edel Beckett’s (nee McGlynn) both adult and children’s Irish Dancing groups and Obinna and Chika’s group of children singing and doing actions to Christian songs. Thanks to all for entertaining us.

I would also like to thank all those who helped on the stalls and setting up, selling tickets and donating prizes for the raffle and donating items for the stalls and helping in the kitchen, your work was much appreciated. A special thank you to Ronnie Scott for co-ordinating the event. – William.

Ronnie Scott would also like to thank all of the above and to let you know that the night raised in excess of €2,000.00. Congratulations to Pam Stroughair who won first prize in the raffle!

Church Review

Subscriptions for the 2008 Church Review (Diocesan Magazine) are now due. Please forward your subscription to the parish office or place in an envelope marked ‘Church Review’ (with your name on it) and put on the collection plate in church. Please make cheques payable to Tallaght Parish Church. I would appreciate if you are opting out of your subscription that you would let me know before I order the magazines at the beginning of January

2009 Offertory Envelopes will be available in the Church porch before Christmas. Please collect your usual number.

If anyone would like to join the weekly offertory envelope scheme, please contact the parish office or fill in the form at the bottom of the order of service sheet and give to one of the Church wardens or the Rector in Church.

CROSSROADS

Crossroads is based in Dublin, a club for young Church of Ireland people. We have membership of approximately 70 people ranging in age form 25-40 with a mixed 50:50 male: female split.

The club plans a variety of activities each month including weekends away, go Karting, hill walking, horse/greyhound racing, bowling, pitch and putt, visiting historic buildings, theatre nights, musical nights, BBQs and social night out in Dublin and surrounding counties. We have a regular event where we meet on the last Thursday night of each month in the bar of Buswell's Hotel.
