Crossroads is based in Dublin, a club for young Church of Ireland people. We have membership of approximately 70 people ranging in age form 25-40 with a mixed 50:50 male: female split.

The club plans a variety of activities each month including weekends away, go Karting, hill walking, horse/greyhound racing, bowling, pitch and putt, visiting historic buildings, theatre nights, musical nights, BBQs and social night out in Dublin and surrounding counties. We have a regular event where we meet on the last Thursday night of each month in the bar of Buswell's Hotel.

The funeral of James Young (Jobstown Square) took place here in St. Maelruain's on 19th December 2007. The service was conducted by Archdeacon Gordon Linney.

Rector's Letter - March 2008

A word from William……

The 6th February saw Ash Wednesday and the first day of Lent. We have been having weekly Lenten services on Wednesday evenings where we have been looking at the ‘Hard Gospel’. So far, we have covered the subject of Faith and Ethnicity, Faith and Sexuality, Faith and Tradition and Faith and Patriotism and as this goes to print we still have to cover the subjects of Faith and Class, Faith and Young People, Faith and Gender and Faith and Age.

At our family service on 24th February we were delighted to welcome Blessington parishioner Daphne Harvey who is training as a lay reader. She will be with us for three Sundays. Daphne led the service while I preached the sermon. Many of you may be familiar with Daphne, her daughter is St. Maelruain's Parishioner Jenny Devine. Daphne and her family often come to St. Maelruain’s on special occasions like Harvest and Carol services. Thanks to Valerie for working with the Sunday school children in preparation for the song they sang at the service

The family service was followed by tea / coffee provided by our Sunday School in aid of their Lenten project CMS in Kenya. They raised €576.75. Thank you to Sunday School Superintendent Douglas Bailey for organising the event and to Amy who stepped in to help due to the absence of our other Sunday school leaders Thomas and Sourena who were on holiday in India.

Mothering Sunday was on 2nd March, although many may think of it as a ‘Hallmark Holiday’ it is a reminder to give thanks for our Mothers and all that they do. Thank you to Regina Donoghue and Janet Edgely for the lovely posies they made, which were given to the ladies in the congregation.

Normally on Mothering Sunday, in recent years, we have had a Discovery Service here in St. Maelruain's as Mothering Sunday is a big day of celebration in Africa. This year, the African ladies felt it would be insensitive to Annama, one of our leading Indian ladies, as her husband John, our Churchwarden, has been in ICU in hospital since 25th January. So the decision was made to hold a healing Mothers Day service in the Chapel of Tallaght Hospital. It was lovely to see Donald Seale at the service along with his wife Theresa and their neighbours. Donald who for so many years was a faithful worshiper here in Tallaght has unfortunately been in and out of Tallaght Hospital over the last few years.

At the service we also prayed for John. He has been back in Tallaght Hospital following surgery in Beaumont for a couple of weeks and he has now moved out of ICU to the William Stokes Unit. While there has been a weekly improvement in his health, he still has a long way to go. Please remember John, Annama and their children Sharon and Sybil in your prayers. Thank you to Rev Obinna Ulogwara for organising the service, to Valerie for playing the organ and to Amy and Patricia for the refreshments after the service.

While on the subject of healing, as a member of the Diocesan Healing Committee I have been asked to take the lunch-time healing service in St. Anne’s, Dawson Street on the 3rd Tuesday of each month.

I would like to wish all the readers of the Losset a very happy Easter. We look forward to this time of year of renewal with the trees budding, spring flowers blooming and the sound of birds nesting. May Easter also be a time to remind us of our spiritual growth and renewal.

Obinna's Window

We recently had a guest preacher from London, the Revd. Canon Benjamin Enwuchola, the Chaplain for the International Community in the Diocese of London. Canon Ben was in Ireland on a six day consultation invitation by the Church Missionary Society (CMS) Ireland. Other parties include Dr Tani Omideyi of the Lighthouse Project Liverpool (an independent social gospel project): The redeemed Church of God and The Dublin and Glendalough Diocesan Chaplaincy for the International Community. My wife and I hosted Canon Ben during his stay in Dublin. He preached at our sister Parish (Whitechurch) on Ash Wednesday and preached here in Tallaght Parish on the 1st Sunday in Lent. He had since returned to London and has sent a message that he was very grateful to the Parish and enjoyed the fellowship we shared together.

The relationship between the parish and the Chaplaincy continues to grow stronger. The parish recently nominated five people to represent her at the Diocesan Discovery Parish Link Representatives. These representatives we hope will join in an initial training being organised by the Chalplaincy at the Diocesan level. They will be commissioned by the Archbishop after their training. Their main duty is to help the local church leadership to provide an adequate welcome and balanced integration in our churches.

School News March 2008

The first event that the children were involved in since we came back to school was during Christian Unity week, when we attended the Ecumenical Service in St. Maelruain’s Church, in Tallaght village. The children from 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class sang 2 songs and did a reading. This was a very worthwhile experience and the children sang beautifully.

It’s all systems go for Ms. Edel McGlynn and the Green School Committee. Edel has spent a huge amount of time putting together our “Application Folder,” well done to her. The children and parents on the committee are doing a great job too. We now have a Green Schools Code, selected by competition and written by Hannah Barrett.

Edel hopes to apply for our Green Flag before the 1st March deadline. Well done everybody, now watch this space!

This is the International Year of the Potato! Every school in the country has received a “Grow your own Potato” kit from Agri Aware; we planted our potatoes on Thursday 7th February at Assembly, they should be ready to harvest in June.

The 5th and 6th class “Bí Gnóthach” project is going very well. They have decided to do a Baking Project. They have called it “Baking Blasters.” Their slogan is “Baking Blasters, faster than light, we make ‘em just right.” They are doing a great job so far!

The children in 1st and 2nd class with their teacher, Ms. Caroline Rountree are going to the Civic Theatre on Friday 29th February to a production of “The Bus” by Maeve Ingoldsby and Philip Hardy. The theatre is within walking distance.

A football team coached by Ms. Karen Mooney, our secretary, took part in a Football Blitz event organised by the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) in the National Basketball Arena on Friday 8th February. Great fun was had by all. The team were given t-shirts and medals for participating.

Wedding

The wedding of Suzanne Moody (daughter of Gerard and Sylvia) and Marty Nutt took place on 7th February at 2.00pm. Congratulations to them both and we wish them both every happiness for the future.

Mothers' Union

On Monday 11th February we were visited by two ladies from T.I.P. (Trafficking in People). They told us that this very serious breach of human rights mostly affected women and children. They outlined ways in which we could watch out for suspect situations, even in our immediate community.

On Monday 10th March we will be going to the Civic Theatre to see Des Keogh in “The Love of the Hungry Farmer”. This is a charity event being organized by the local branch of the I.C.A.

Bowling Club

We have being busy with our League and Club matches over the last few weeks.

The Price team are through to the final of their group and they will play in Lucan on Thursday 10th April. The Rohu are in the final of their section and will play on Friday 4th April in Glenageary and we wish both teams the very best of luck. We wish the Hope team good wishes when they play their semi-final match in Stillorgan on Tuesday 4th March. Unfortunately the Miller lost to St Paul’s and we wish them the best of luck when they play their next match.

We are hosting the final of the McIllwaine on Tuesday 8th April and we wish both teams the best of luck. We are looking forward to the Annual bowling dinner on Friday 18th April in Stillorgan Park Hotel and we thank Bob Kerr for organising this event once again.

St. Patrick's Day Service

As St. Patrick’s Day falls during Holy Week this year, we will be having a St. Patrick’s Day service at 11am on Saturday 15th March 2008.

Boys' Brigade

All sections are working hard in preparation for the display on May 10th, 2008. Our fundraising efforts for Make a Wish Foundation are going well and it is hoped to hand a cheque over at the display. Anchor boys will do a sponsored walk to raise the final monies!

Junior Section are hoping to take part in the figure marching competition in April and are working on some dramas for the drama competition.

Many thanks to parent Ronnie Bailey who did some self defence work with company section recently.

Our numbers in the company have risen in the last year. It is wonderful to see so many boys interested in Boys Brigade and it is great to see the 2nd Dublin flourish once again.

The Officers wish everyone a very happy Easter. On Sunday 30th March the boys will provide refreshments after Sunday morning service in aid of the Laura Lynn Children’s Hospice. This charity has been chosen by the Boy’s Brigade in Ireland for fundraising this year. The members would welcome your support for this worthy cause on Sunday 30th .

Whist

There will be NO Whist Drive in March due to the date falling during Holy Week. The next Whist Drive will be on Monday 21st April 2008 in the Old Hall.

Religious Services move to Longwave

RTE is closing its medium wave transmitter on 24th March and is relocation it’s programmes including the Sunday morning broadcast religious service to it’s long wave frequency. If you currently listen to RTE Radio 1 on MW you will need to retune you radio to RTE Radio 1 FM broadcasting between 88.2 and 90.0 Mhz. Easter Vestry

The Easter Vestry (AGM) will take place on Sunday 13th April at 12pm following the 11am Morning Prayer Service in the Church.

This is an opportunity for you to come and see how the parish is doing. It is also an opportunity for you to have the chance to elect our Select Vestry (new committee) who run the parish on your behalf.
